Synopsis/Details
Georgeta Cazacu visits her sister Juliani, who lives in Baile Herculane, Romania where she owns a restaurant.
She meets her sister’s pregnant friend at the restaurant.
Her sister tells her that her friend is pregnant and what it means as they're the last of our well-known family. For hundreds of years, this area’s been protected from those who’d commit crimes. There are tales of a flying being visiting anyone guilty of a crime and scare the bejesus out of them. If a person commits an evil crime, they’d be carried away and never seen again. Georgeta, that being has always been one of our family and Vali is the last of the line. Georgeta nods knowing this to be true. We hope the baby will be a boy.
One night the friend and her husband are killed as he runs off the road into a tree. His wife is rushed to the hospital but dies while giving birth to a baby girl.
They discuss what will become of the child. Georgeta, with the consent of the city officials, adopts the baby and brings her back to California, and names her Jolie.
Years pass: the girl is intelligent and an exceptional athlete, especially in basketball.
She goes to college at Southern California on a scholarship.
She becomes a star player. One day while dunking the basketball she's amazed that she can move through the air as high as she wants and tumbles to the floor. She fakes injury. At night, by herself, she jumps off her second-floor bedroom balcony snd soars through the air. For the next few nights, she does this and soon realizes she can fly and that it comes naturally for her.
One night, while standing on the balcony, she leaps off into the air and soars along the coastline and out over the Pacific Ocean. White flying thoughts enter her mind that like her father, Vali she should be catching criminals. Not liking these thought she flies home. However, that night while sleeping, she sees a man flying above a town and capturing a burglar. Jolie wakes in a sweat. Over the next week, she practices flying and having the nightly dreams that are always about this man dealing with criminals. He’s flying out of the mountains to a town.
She quits the basketball team faking mental stress. Jolie calls her aunt Juliani and asks about her dad and his family. The aunt asks why, and Julie only tells her about the dreams. Her aunt is hesitant but tells her the story.
Jolie is having a difficult time accepting what is happening to her. She starts buying and reading comic books about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Ms. Marvel, and others.
Her mother comes into Her room and sees all the superhero comic books and is upset. Jolie tells her it's just a helpful break from all the college studies.
After flying one night and feels pressured to look for crime, she decides she needs a name and costume. At the college library Jolie thumbs through a book about birds. Seeing the name Nighthawk, it sticks out to her. She likes it as she will only fly at night. A costume is designed like the bird’s camouflage using a new stretchy, skin-like synthetic material that helps create an invisibility-cloak-like camouflage. The polymer has dyes embedded in it, which causes it to change the color thus creating a camouflage that can adapt to any background. Her costume starts with the nighthawk’s colors of dark brown with specks of white and a striking white blaze down the legs.
Now Jolie begins her life of stopping crime. When learning of gang activity she captures drug dealers and robbers. Soon she is well-known among those in law enforcement. Then there's a new challenge when criminals, who have created a powerful flying robot, called Droneman, that begins stealing drugs from boats coming up to Los Angeles from Mexico. They sell the drugs to the various gangs who are distributing them. Nighthawk's new quest is now to capture the criminals behind Droneman.
