DEREK (35) gets a phone call from the local hospital. He hurries to find his WIFE on life support after she had multiple seizures while driving. He calls FIONA (35) who hurries to his side. DOCTOR DUNCAN and NURSE GRACE tend to their patient. When Derek steps out for a shower, he returns to find his estranged father CHARLES (65). Derek insists that Charles leave. Three months later, Fiona suggests that they pull the plug on Derek’s wife. Charles returns and wishes aloud that he had the chance to meet her. Derek tells him that his wife is one of three amazing women he’s met in his life. He tells Charles that he’s going to describe them, and Charles must guess which one is his wife.
We cut to Summer, 2008. Derek is sitting with BEN (21) on the night before he leaves to fight in the war. KARA (21) arrives, and they head out for the evening. Derek and Kara get to know each other, and Ben frowns to himself. Derek and Kara spend the night together and Derek leaves her a note before heading out. Unbeknownst to Derek, Ben pockets the note. Derek spends the day with his mother, CELESTE (45), who urges him to mend his relationship with his absent father. Meanwhile, Ben tells Kara that she can find Derek at the train station. She meets him there, they kiss, and she sees him off. Ben decides to step out of the way.
During Derek’s deployment, he and Kara write to each other. When he returns home, he introduces Kara to Celeste. Kara announces that she’s been accepted to Harvard Law School. They make plans to continue seeing each other while Derek is in the Marines. Ben calls and asks Derek to come see him. Derek feels guilty about scooping up Kara, but Kara insists that Ben must move on. Derek decides not to visit Ben. While Derek is away, Ben’s mother dies, and he seeks solace with Kara. Derek suspects that something is going on between them, and they argue. Derek gets drunk at the bar and wakes up with half-naked women in his apartment. Kara arrives just as Derek is pushing one of the girls out. She turns around and goes home.
In 2010, Derek gets his discharge papers. He receives a call from Charles and hangs up on him. With Celeste, Derek admits to his survivor’s guilt after several of his fellow marines died. In 2011, Derek meets IMANI (23) in a macroeconomics class. They begin seeing each other, but Imani is adamant that she doesn’t want a serious relationship. Derek gets a call that Celeste is in the hospital and hurries to her side. Charles meets him there, and they argue. Charles reveals that he had an affair with Ben’s mother, MARLA, making Ben his half-brother. Derek refuses to talk to him further.
Imani arrives and Derek tells her everything. They leave the hospital together, heading for a bar. The next morning, Derek decides to confront his father. At the hospital, he learns that Celeste is brain dead. Charles speaks at the funeral and tells the mourners that Celeste was the woman for him. Derek chastises him afterwards, and Charles reveals that he and Celeste had begun dating again. Derek maintains that he never wants to see Charles again. One year later, Derek attends a fashion show for Imani’s latest clothing collection. At dinner, Derek pulls out an engagement ring just as Imani gets a phone call from Ralph Lauren. When Derek proposes, she immediately says yes. Later, they are meeting with a WEDDING PLANNER when Derek sees Kara walking down the street. He becomes consumed with the thought of her. Derek sees Kara in a courtyard outside of work, and they say hello. Kara invites him to a dinner party, and he asks to bring Imani.
Derek and Kara spend the night staring at each other, enough so that both Ben and Imani notice. When they leave, Derek and Imani fight. Kara apologizes to Ben for inviting them. Ben reveals that Derek is his brother. Imani kicks Derek out of their home. In the present day, Fiona arrives at the hospital. When Derek reveals that he’s been telling Charles the story of how he met his wife, Fiona asks to hear it, too. In Summer 2013, Derek and Ben reconcile. Both are now single, and ready to bury the hatchet as brothers. Derek allows Ben to read some of his writing, and Ben insists on funding Derek’s first book. Derek arrives that the library to find a book on novel writing.
The librarian, CARMEN (28), helps him. Derek asks her out immediately. They have dinner, and Derek walks her to her car. He doesn’t move to kiss her. When he tries to call Carmen again, she doesn’t answer. She even tries avoiding him when he looks for her at the library. When Derek finally finds her, she tells him that she thought he wasn’t interested because he didn’t kiss her. They agree to go out again. They play mini golf and then share a kiss. Several weeks later, Carmen reads Derek’s writing. She reads of Imani and later searches for her on the internet. On her blog, there is an article about ‘the one who got away.’ She tells Derek that she can’t compete with Imani, and Derek insists that he loves her.
Months later, Ben and Carmen help Derek celebrate his first book as well as Derek and Carmen’s first year anniversary. Another year later, Derek is at a book signing. Charles arrives and asks to have dinner with both of his sons. Derek and Ben agree. In the present day, we learn that Fiona is Ben’s wife. Dr. Duncan hands Derek papers for passive euthanasia. Charles promises to be there for Derek, without even waiting for confirmation on which woman it is. Derek and Charles embrace before Charles turns to go. At home, Derek goes through his wife’s office. He finds a letter from Kara, on their two-year anniversary. We cut back to two years ago, when Derek arrived at Kara’s door. He tells her that he cannot live without her. Derek sits down at his computer and starts a new project: Love Note to My First Love.
