Synopsis/Details
On her 13th birthday, Claire's dreams come true when her beloved Nana gives her a smartphone as a gift (against her mother's wishes). A photo is snapped of Claire with her family and friends. Three years later, Claire's parents are annoyed that she's always on her phone. During dinner, her older sister Rose calls, excited about their upcoming visit to Barcelona, where she is studying abroad with friends. Later that week at the beach with her best friend Fatima, they discuss the upcoming trip to visit their older sisters. Claire takes a photo of a lightning storm and is struck. She quickly becomes suspicious of her surroundings because something isn't right. Time seems to jump whenever she swipes her phone. It takes her a while to realize it's because she's not in the real world, but stuck inside the photos of her Instagram account. Desperate to get out before she misses her first trip to Europe, Claire travels through the pictures trying to find a way out, getting bumped back to the beginning every time the Claire on the outside posts a new picture, and becoming stuck every time she ends up in a throwback photo before smartphones were invented. With Fatima's help, and using hashtags to speed up the process, she works her way through pictures of her greatest loves: friends, cats, books, coffee, Christmas, and fashion. As she works her way through the photos, she remembers fun times with her friends, childhood adventures with her Nana, and tensions with her mother, culminating on a disastrous Christmas vacation followed (and preceded by) a school Christmas concert, where she finally figures out how to use her mother's camera to escape from a throwback photo. Claire realizes that time is running out when she posts a photo of her new outfit for Spain next week, and the crunch gets even worse when her phone on the outside runs out of battery and she's stuck in the current photo until it's charged. When she's bumped to a photo of the airport departure lounge, she knows she's got one last push to make it out while her other self is stuck in airplane mode. Using the hashtag 'Vacay' , Claire revisits the terrible Christmas vacation and handles it with more maturity and understanding of her mother. She then works her way to one last hashtag: Family. It brings her to the photo of her 13th birthday, her very first photo on Instagram. While Fatima urges her to swipe one last time and be out, because everyone will be there in Europe, Claire reminds her, not exactly everyone. Claire goes to her Nana and hugs her. This is the last time she saw her beloved Nana alive, and all those throwback photos had been a precious chance to spend time with her. They visit one last time, before Claire swipes her away, saying goodbye to her forever. Finally in Barcelona, Claire gathers with Fatima and their families, enjoying the sights of the Sagrada Familia. Claire is overjoyed at first, but notices that the people around them are behaving strangely. She realizes this isn't in fact the real world, but another bumped photo that her other self has posted in Spain. As the photos continue to go up rapid fire now that she's on vacation, she admits defeat and knows there's only one thing she can do. She deactivates her account. Finally free, she enjoys her trip in real time sightseeing, visiting her sister and enjoying the food in Barcelona. When asked if she's going to post a photo of her gelato, she says no and puts her phone away. As the family walks to the next landmark (Park Guell), she shares a moment with her mother, who is delighted and surprised.
