Synopsis/Details
Indian teenager POOKIE (16) says goodbye to her parents AMITA (40s) and VINEET (40s) at the airport. In voice over she recalls the story of her upbringing. She starts by chronicling her birth and her family moving to London from India and her failed arranged relationship with SANDEEP, who lied about being gay to get out of it. Pookie then tells the story of her next boyfriend, JAMES, who she dumped when he tried to have sex with her feet. Tired of heartbreak, Pookie adopts a rebellious punk persona: ‘Punk-Ass Pookie’.
Back at the airport Pookie leaves for a year abroad in the USA. There, she is introduced to her host couple, PEPE (30s) and FREDDY (mid-30s) and their daughter, CASSIOPEIA (16). At school, Cassiopeia introduces Pookie to her childhood friend, JAKE. The trio watch their school team practice baseball. Cassiopeia tells Pookie that she wanted to join the team, but the coach would not let her. Annoyed, Pookie heckles the COACH, who challenges her to bat a few balls. Leaning on the cricket skills taught to her by her father, Pookie hits a ball out of the park. Impressed, the coach says he will allow Cassiopeia on the team if Pookie helps them win a championship.
The trio get hot dogs in the park. There, JESUS (17) runs down the stairs and trips, falling in front of Pookie as if he is proposing. Cassiopeia takes a photo. Jesus gets to his feet, apologises to Pookie, and leaves.
That night, Pookie looks at the photo of Jesus and considers that she might have a crush on him. She turns on music and dances to distract herself. Freddy, Pepe, and Cassiopeia return home and join in with the dance.
