Synopsis/Details
Dr. Lexi Wolff is an award-winning inventor and scientist, who pioneered a method called “rapid data transfer (RDT)”, which involved teleporting quantum information at record speeds. Her research has given her great wealth and acclaim, but she deals with immense grief and guilt over the death of her best friend, Lyle. She’s also dealing with a lawsuit involving RDT, with her friend and assistant Gia helping along the way.
She invites her old college friends, Daniel, Bridgette, and Terry to her mansion to help work on a new secret project. Daniel is a famous video blogger, and also has unrequited feelings toward Lexi. Bridgette was a prospective business partner of Lexi, who originally conjured the idea of RDT. Terry is the least successful of the group, working as a bartender, but aspires to get rich. Tensions arise when everyone starts to question each other’s motives for reuniting, along with Lexi’s motivation for inviting everyone in the first place.
Lexi reveals the secret project: building a functional teleportation machine. After many unsuccessful trials, relationships start to fray. One particular trial ends in a fight, and everyone splinters off.
One night, Terry and Bridgette stumble across a secret compartment just outside the mansion, discovering a large amount of broken and unfinished teleportation machine. One of them has a dead body inside. Meanwhile, Lexi and Daniel grow closer to each other, leading Lexi to tell him the truth about her project.
Lexi confesses that she knew the teleportation machine worked the entire time, and that the laboratory itself was a teleportation module. She then reveals that in a different reality, Daniel was actually Lyle, while Bridgette and Terry were also different people. Lexi traveled to an alternate reality to reunite with Lyle. However, because she feels that Daniel could never be the real Lyle, she stabs him in the legs to keep him immobile. She then activates the machine, and travels to the new reality.
In an attempt to steal the schematics for the teleportation machine, Terry and Bridgette accidentally activate it, sending them into a different reality where there is heavy a winter snowstorm. They meet “Lyle”, who they believe is Daniel. In a tussle however, the real Daniel kills Lyle.
However, Lexi has followed them to the new reality, and she kills Bridgette and Terry. Daniel confesses that he killed Lyle, but pleads for his life by promising that he can “be Lyle” for her. They return to the lab, where they continue to work on a new project. Daniel smiles at Lexi, and she smiles back at him.
