Resistance

2038: Jacob (24) starts to work as a paramedic for WEYMED, the controversial trillion-dollar monopolist running the medical system in the country. On his first day with his partner Alex (45, female), he’s possibly infected with a new strain of Hansen’s Disease. Just on probation, he’d be denied the expensive nano-cure WEYMED developed against it, but his superior promises to pull some strings. Next shift, Jacob and Alex are called to save an old woman who apparently lives in an abandoned apartment complex. Her condition's critical: her liver was surgically removed without her husband Mr. Kowalski (80) knowing about it. Trying to bring her to the ambulance they’re attacked by a fast, aggressive cyborg-like creature. Jacob lures it away so the others can try to escape. He leads the creature on a cat and mouse chase, until he has no choice but to hide in an apartment. There, Jacob realizes he’s indeed infected with Hansen’s - a death penalty without the nano-cure. He tries to call for help, but communication seems jammed. When he sneaks back to the basement he sees Alex and the Kowalskis are still there. Their ambulance has miraculously disappeared, and Mr. Kowalski confesses he knew about the creatures - his son Christopher, a former WEYMED scientist, is one of them. They send Kowalski to contact his son, distracting the creatures while Jacob and Alex attempt to run. Almost successful, they’re captured by another cyborg. Jacob is jailed up, while Alex is prepared for an unspecified operation. Breaking out of his cell, Jacob finds Christopher, who explains the creatures are like Jacob: Hansen’s patients. They replace infected body parts to survive. Led by THE PROFESSOR, they’ve formed a RESISTANCE, and they prepare for a fight against WEYMED. The corporation had orchestrated the Hansen’s outbreak to drive people into using their nano-cure. It's much more than a medical system. It tracks all health data, position and even speech of its host. When Christopher understands that they’ve removed the liver from his mother to save one of their own, he turns against them. He teams up with Jacob to set a fire that disables the power supply, creating a turmoil - an opportunity for escape. He fits Jacob with an unreliable exoskeleton that enables him to sneak by the creatures. Jacob frees Alex from the operation room. Together, they run to get Mrs. Kowalski, while Christopher saves his father just before he’s being disposed of by two creatures. A big family reunion occurs when Christopher joins the others at the exit. With the jammer now disabled, they call the police - but don’t make it out. The creatures seal their area in the complex and prepare for a fight. SWATs arrive, but Jacob - in his exoskeleton - has to jump from a 6th floor window to make contact and show them how to get in. A full-on battle ensues. Christopher is killed, but Jacob saves the others just before The Professor destroys the whole complex. Jacob is personally debriefed by the enigmatic owner of WEYMED, who promises to cure Jacob if he tells him everything he knows about the resistance. Jacob takes the cure, but then turns against him and joins the fight against WEYMED.
