Synopsis/Details
Arnold, the fearless and respected king of Thornheim, returns from a triumphant campaign, only to find unimaginable grief upon returning home. His beloved wife and two sons, as well as many of his men, have fallen victim to a devastating epidemic. Grief-stricken and furious, Arnold blames the gods for his misfortune. From now on, he defiantly refuses to sacrifice to them, angering his subjects and sowing the seeds of discord among his warriors.
Arnold's lands soon become famine-stricken. Despite his efforts to help his people by distributing his own grain reserves, the kingdom teeters on the brink of rebellion. Rumors spread that the gods have abandoned Arnold, and some whisper that only his sacrifice can appease them. At a feast for his warriors, a drunken Arnold vents his anger, accusing everyone of ingratitude and cursing the gods. In a fit of rage, he destroys the banquet hall and wanders off into the night, collapsing in the forest after becoming heavily intoxicated.
While Arnold is unconscious, he is visited by a mysterious stranger in a tattered cloak. The stranger tells of a heavenly court where Arnold's fate was debated among the gods. Odin decreed that Arnold should learn the true reasons for his suffering and have his wish fulfilled - to be taken to a place where the gods are unknown. The Viking awakens to find himself in a dense forest, but this is not the Norway he knows.
Confused, Arnold stumbles upon a modern village in the Caucasus. He meets Katerina, a girl from Russia who is fascinated by the study of pagan mythology. At first skeptical of his wild claims, she soon realizes the depth of Arnold's knowledge and the authenticity of his Viking roots. Intrigued, she offers to help him navigate this strange new world.
As they travel together, Arnold and Katerina discover ancient connections between their worlds of Scandinavia and the Caucasus. They explore ruins, interpret the legends of their people, and piece together a story that binds their destinies. Along the way, Arnold learns to cope with his grief and anger, finding solace in Katerina's companionship and wisdom.
Their bond deepens into a love no one expected. Through Katerina, Arnold discovers a new purpose and a reason to hope again. Their love story blossoms against the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the Caucasus, bridging the gap between past and present.
As Arnold confronts his inner demons, he gains a profound understanding of his losses and the complex interplay of fate and free will. The journey transforms him from a broken warrior into a man of wisdom and compassion, ready to face whatever fate awaits him.
At the climax, Arnold must make a momentous decision that will determine his future and the future of those he loves. His actions will reveal whether he has truly learned from his past and whether love and redemption are possible, even for a Viking king.
Return of the Viking is a story of loss and rebirth, finding love in unexpected places, and man’s eternal struggle with fate. It combines the raw power of Viking lore with the mysticism of the Caucasus to create a story that is both epic and intimate.
