Synopsis/Details
In the near future, a woman named Amber decides to take a new medication promising to bring back forgotten memories from early childhood. Having heard about the drug from a friend, she decides to proceed with the treatment even though she is quite skeptical about the drug's efficacy. She receives a package in the mail with detailed instructions on how to take the medicine and what to expect. The kit also comes with "reverse pills" that are meant to be taken in the event the patient decides to stop the treatment process and erase the newly-reconstructed memories. The manual cautions, however, that should the patient disclose details to others, even upon undergoing the reversal procedure, the memory may be recalled through discussion and possible corroboration. Upon taking the drug, Amber begins to recall memories that had been buried in the deep confines of her mind. These memories, which come to Amber in her sleep and are in the form of fragmentary images (and not clear narratives), include random events such as an early childhood injury and a fond memory from an exciting event. A few nights into the treatment, Amber has a disturbing dream in which she recalls fragments suggesting that her father may have molested her during a vacation and on a day when her mother had gone out shopping. She recalls her father playing "games" with her and asking her never to disclose "their little secret". Amber is deeply disturbed by these memories and finds that they are changing the way she feels towards her bedridden, ailing father, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is expected to die in the near future. Amber's first reaction is to brush off these memories as false mental recollections resulting from a defective product. One night, she experiences a recall episode wherein she sees her now-deceased mother return from shopping during that fateful summer vacation. Amber recalls mustering the courage to tell her mother about the secret. However, her mom gives no credence to Amber's story, partly because of potential suggestibility and partly due to her inability to communicate clearly as a child. Following this latest recollection, Amber decides to escape this nightmare by taking the "reverse pills". To her chagrin, she find out that it takes around two weeks for the reverse drug to take effect and she has no choice but to deal with the emerging memories and their real-world ramifications. Amber, who feels her life has been upended, even considers speaking to her aunt about the event. She also struggles with the thought of confronting her dying father with this traumatic memory. Amber is so obsessed with this recent discovery that she repeatedly sees additional fragments that slowly complete the puzzle add detail to the events that transpired during her childhood. In one particular dream, Amber sees her mother return from shopping and notice something suspicious which could have possibly revealed what had taken place. However, her mom decides to look the other way and ignore the evidence. This last memory devastates Amber and pushes her closer to confronting her father knowing that it may cause the memory to become reality and stay with her forever even after the reverse drug takes effect. Amber struggles with this decision until the day before the reversal drug is to complete its course. Knowing that she has a few hours before the memory is lost forever, she drives to the hospital to speak with her father. Upon arrival, she is informed by the nurses that her father had died that afternoon. The hospital had tried to inform her, but Amber had placed her phone on "Do not Disturb" mode in an attempt to stop herself from disclosing the secret to any one of her concerned friends out of sheer desperation. At the end of the film, we see Amber at her father's funeral. By this time, the reverse drug has apparently erased the previously-revived memory and we see Amber as she listens to a eulogy of her father. We track Amber's reactions as she listens to the speech. She laughs at some memories and cries for her loss; but in the end, we see pain in her eyes, almost as if she still remembers.
