Synopsis/Details
This series is basically "How To Get Away With Murder" meets "Queer As Folk" for Young Adults. I came up with the concept of 'Samus' five years ago and it went through various changes that probably would make anyone's head explode. As a Gay man myself, I wanted to create a show that portrays LGBTQ+ people in a positive way and not at all as stereotypes. What is the premise of this Drama/Dark Comedy with 12 episodes? Well, the lead is Samus Ortiz (who also narrates the show) and he is an openly Gay Latino male in his late 20?s. He is a movie critic at the LGBTQ+ paper titled L&G Daily. This was never his dream as he wanted to write about topics that pertain to the community. While on a date with a man he has been chatting with for a month named Dylan Bregar, Samus and Dylan share a kiss. The kiss causes Dylan to go home early and block Samus from every social media account! Samus decides to write a piece about the date but he exaggerates the details of it and disguises Dylan's name. Samus' boss Belky and his son Gustin are stunned their top movie critic would upload a dating article on the their site, but they are even more shocked to discover the article has thousands of likes, shares and is trending on Twitter. Samus shares the idea of creating a Gay Dating Column where he will go undercover on first dates with the guys he matches with on the dating app Tinderdate. After the dates, he will write about the experience to inform other Gay men that dating is real and it doesn?t have to be strictly about sex. So Belky gives Samus a trial run of five weeks and if he keeps the numbers up, Belky would be more than happy to give the movie critic his own Gay dating advice column. The pilot episode ends with a five week flash forward (present day) where the audience finds Samus lying face up on the floor of his apartment with a stab wound to his stomach. The screen turns black and the episode ends! Crazy right? The next five episodes, will switch from the present to the past showing the moments that leads up to Samus attack. We see Samus interact with his best friend Ursula who is struggling with admitting she has feelings for her ex-boyfriend Kyle even though she is in a loving relationship with her current girlfriend Tara. Then we are introduced to Carlito who is Samus former bestfriend and currently dating Samus ex-boyfriend. Each episode will include Samus on a date with random guys and each guy is crazier than the next and the flash forwards will show whether Samus survives the attack and the last episode will reveal who stabbed him! The sixth episode will be the end of the mystery and at the end of that episode starts a new mystery that will unfold for the last five episodes of the season, but unlike the first 6 episodes, the last 6 will take place in the present. This mystery is a serial killer that is strangling Gay men. Here is a quick rundown (filled with Spoilers) of each episode: In the Pilot Episode, we watch as movie reviewer Samus goes on a date with a free-lance photographer, named Dylan Bregar. They go and watch a movie Samus' boss told him to review and then come back out hours later disgusted with how boring the movie was. They share a kiss which according to Samus' voice over was horrible. The scene cuts to the next day where Samus' boss Belky and Gustin are reading an article Samus published to their site talking about the horrible date and the awful kiss. Belky is upset that Samus didn?t review the movie he saw, but Samus reveals that the movie was a conflict of interest since the head of the studio is friends with Belky s partner. Samus figures that he is fired and is prepared to pack up his office and leave but Gustin tells him the article crashed their site. Samus pitches them the idea of creating a dating column aimed towards Gay men who want to find love. As Gustin asks him more about the date with Dylan, Samus reveals to the audience that the date went amazing and the kiss was very magical, unfortunately later that night Dylan blocked Samus from every social media account they were interacting in and even blocked his texts. Samus feels guilty and self-conscious that he did something wrong so him writing that article about a non-magical kiss, is how he copes with the random blocking from Dylan. Belky gives him a trial run of five weeks to dish out more articles like this and Samus pitches that he will go on first dates with guys he matches with on a dating app and write about the dates without using real names. As Samus leaves the office happy to finally get a shot at his dream job, we flash forward to five weeks later (present day) where we enter Samus apartment to find him lying on the floor with a stab wound to his stomach. In the second episode, we see Samus and Ursula walking down the street talking about their dating lives. Ursula admits that she is currently hanging out with her ex-boyfriend Kyle and they talk about whether exes should be friends. Later on, Samus goes on a date with a college student named Eric, who kisses Samus to get his ex-boyfriend jealous. Seeing how it doesn't work, the college student runs after his ex in the middle of the street. (Flash forward: Belky knocks on Samus apartment door to speak to him because he s angry. Samus eyes open indicating he is still alive from the stab wound.) In the third episode, we are introduced to Samus' former best friend Carlito- who is now dating Samus' ex. Carlito works for L&G Daily s rival paper HeSh'e Magazine. Samus and Carlito trade insults. Later on, Samus goes on a date with a middle-aged man named Parker, and their date seemingly goes well until Parker's mother, Mary shows up and gives them a basket full of lube, condoms and a vibrator. Feeling uncomfortable, Samus goes home. (Flash forward: Belky goes to his apartment upstairs, as he doesn't get an answer from Samus. Ursula walks upstairs to Samus door and is about to knock on it when she decides to open it. She walks inside and discovers Samus on the floor and she screams out for help.) In the fourth episode, Samus dates a Gay Nerd who is more into his favorite show than he is in dating anyone. During this episode, Samus decides to take Tara up on her offer to go speed dating so the men he meets there overwhelm him. From men looking solely for dates, shallow men who want muscular gays and even one man that was hoping to score drugs. This episode ends with Samus running into Dylan Bregar-the guy who blocked him in the first episode! (Flash forward: There is two in this episode, the first flash forward shows Ursula and Tara in the waiting room of the hospital waiting to hear back from the operating doctor. He comes out and his words make it seem as if Samus died which is to add suspense to the audience. In the second flash forward, which takes place in the end of the episode, the doctor reveals that Samus is fine and they had to give him a blood transfusion and suture his wound.) In the fifth episode, Samus wakes up the next day with a bad hangover to find Dylan stayed in his apartment because he s friends with Tara and was worried about the writer. It is revealed that Dylan ghosted Samus because he is HIV+ and is scared of being rejected. Samus explains this doesn't bother him and he should ve told him the truth instead of blocking him. Both men kiss and decide to go on a real date. (Flash Forward: This takes place the day of Samus attack. There is a knock on his door and it s revealed to be Gustin! He asks Samus if he can come in and Samus tells him Sure . The episode ends just as Gustin enters the apartment closing the door behind him. *Gasp* Did Gustin stab Samus?!) In the sixth episode, Gustin reveals that he quit L&G Daily and due to a bad business deal, Belky loses L&G Daily. Gustin reveals that Belky was never going to give Samus his own column and he was just egging him along for his own amusement. However, he tells Samus that he is creating his own LGBTQ+ inclusive paper and he wants to give Samus his own column. Samus is honored and excited to start this new venture, Gustin tells him he s looking for a bigger and better office for the paper. Gustin leaves and Samus is over the moon that his dreams are finally coming true, but that feeling quickly diminishes when he sees Parker standing by the door. [Parker is the date he had where his mother made Samus feel uncomfortable]. He reveals that he works at the DMV and he found Samus' address through there and he even has pictures of Samus & Dylan together on a date! Parker also reveals that he has the truth about Dylan and gives Samus an envelope. Samus throws the envelope on the sofa and tells Parker to leave. Heartbroken that the writer didn't feel the same about him, Parker stabs Samus in the stomach with a knife he was hiding in the jacket sleeve of his left side. The episode flash forwards to the present where we find Ursula and Tara walking over to Samus' apartment with flowers and Get well balloons . As they talk, they reveal that the cops bombarded Parker in a building and Parker killed himself out of guilt. They reach Samus' apartment to find him and Dylan are there together. Ursula is so happy to see Samus is alive and well. Dylan goes into the kitchen help Tara put away a cake she brought, Dylan sees the envelope with his name on it (it s the same envelope that Parker brought to Samus earlier). Dylan sneaks off into the bathroom and opens it, he is upset and shocked at the contents inside but the audience only sees a picture, which looks like his mugshot. He quickly puts the envelope in the back of his jeans and leaves the bathroom. Tara decides to get drinks to celebrate Samus' new column and Dylan decides to tag along leaving Ursula and Samus to catch up. As Dylan and Tara leaves the apartment, a voice over plays with Samus talking about how valuable friendships are and how short life is. Through the voice over, we see a montage of various scenes. Gustin is typing on his laptop creating job postings for the new paper, Mary (Parker's mother) is seen crying in the living room of her home clutching onto a picture of her now deceased son and Dylan rips up the envelope throwing the pieces into the garbage on the NYC street. Tara drags him into a store and it s revealed to be a jewelry store indicating that she's going to propose to Ursula. We return to the apartment where Ursula tells Samus that she s pregnant and the episode ends. Thank you so much for reading this and I am excited to present a show with the representations of a Gay Latino male lead who is a proud Gay man, as well as to tell a story that is full of mysteries and twists and turns along the way. I feel these don t get shown much in shows, because Gay led shows tend to have sex and I get that sex sells, but many people in the LGBTQ+ community-as well as our allies- yearn for a show that is entertaining, mysterious and fresh; all which you can get from this show. I want to thank you for your consideration and I hope you enjoy your day! Eternally grateful, Edwin Betancourt.
