Synopsis/Details
A strange girl named Emily shows up at a farmhouse and interrupts the suicide of Mike Ward, a bitter and demoralized quadriplegic man with “racial tendencies”. She shoots a real estate agent and disappears before Chief Deputy Ronnie Jones arrives with his colleagues.
Ronnie Jones learns that Emily has escaped from “The Brood” - a shadowy, demonic group of sex-traffickers who will stop at nothing to get her back. Ronnie would be lost were it not for the direction of Julie Sanders, an equally mysterious FBI Agent who wears her Christian faith on her sleeve.
When Sheriff Bo Tucker is murdered, Ronnie is put in charge. There is panic all around, and the entire weight of it seems to fall on Ronnie’s shoulders. The blissful mundanity that was Ronnie’s life has been replaced by fear, dread, and nausea.
Corruption runs deep in Brighton County, Iowa. Every move is fraught with peril. Friends, neighbors, deputies, politicians, no one can be trusted. The Brood has tentacles everywhere.
Ronnie asks Mike Ward and his elderly parents to hide Emily in their farmhouse until she can be safely removed. Mike’s parents gladly do it, but Mike would prefer to be rid of this girl who already calls him, “Daddy.” His cantankerousness is exacerbated by the fact that he despises Ronnie’s race.
Ronnie, with help from his deputies, the Wards, local police, the FBI, and some secretive vigilantes must get Emily to safety. They need to convince The Brood that she is gone, and make sure no one knows where she is. Until those objectives are met, The Brood will continue to hunt for her. People will be in peril.
Ronnie begins to learn that flesh and blood are not enough. The powers of hell can only be beaten with help from God himself.
