Synopsis/Details
Toby's getting married. His father's set up a union of their new money and the landed gentry. It's a perfect opportunity for a "working class man made good" to find legitimacy through his son. Except Toby feels trapped in this transactional engagement. It's triggered a repeat of a depressive spiral. Across town, Olivia's been fired and her landlord is evicting her from her single room in a shared house. Tensions flare as Toby announces he's breaking off the engagement. Pressure mounts from his mother, who tries to convince him it's for his own good. After all, she was a trophy wife and there's more to marriage than love. His father is more direct, threatening to throw him out of the house and disown him. Determined to put things right, Toby heads to his fiancé's apartment. IMOGEN is furious, facing financial hardship as her family's broke, and online humiliation as "the dumped bride". She threatens him and tells him she'll claim he tried to attack her. To make good her lie, she slashes him with a knife while pretending to be attacked. He turns to the distraught Olivia. They met in therapy after their respective suicide attempts and formed a close friendship. She tends to his wound as they assess their futile situations. Olivia hides Toby under her bed when his father shows up. He threatens to destroy her, though she stands up to him and implies the pact has formed between them. When he's gone, Toby kneels in front of her and seals the pact by taking her foot and dragging it across his throat. They go to a Weeping Willow hanging over a riverbank in solemn silence. A beautiful place in nature to finish their lives. Olivia asks him to kill her as she can't bear to see him die, but he refuses. Instead, they sink to their knees and embrace. The following morning, a dog walker finds the two of them slumped against one another.

The Writer: Ross Hori

I grew up in the UK and had a moderately successful career in business change. In 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, I upped sticks and moved to Japan. I've been writing on-and-off for over 30 years. My non-fiction has been published in a couple of broadsheets and financial services trade press. Amazingly I got an IMDB entry after supporting a crowdfunder. Since moving to Japan, my creative writing side has reemerged. Mostly I write science-fiction, some adventure and tried my hand at pulp. Go to bio
