Erika eagerly volunteers for a NASA study with her best friend, agreeing to spend over ten days sleeping in a stasis pod. However, an earthquake of catastrophic proportions strikes California, severing it from the rest of the country and leaving Erika's pod lost for centuries. When she is finally awakened four hundred years later, she must undergo a rigorous evaluation to prove her worthiness to join the crew of the Odyssey Conquest One, humanity's flagship vessel for exploring planets and archiving history. But as she confronts her deepest fears, Erika realizes that the future is not what she imagined it to be: the earthlings who populate the Odyssey are devoid of self-doubt and personal ambition, focused solely on their missions and exploring the unknown.
