For the majority of black slaves, who worked the plantations of
America’s deep south in 1859. Life offers little in the way of
a happy or peaceful existence. Rather, it is an excruciating
endurance of perpetual misery-- squalor, fear, and degradation.
Yet within the confines of a small secluded cotton plantation,
in southwest Georgia. A select community of Africans enjoy an
incomprehensible lifestyle. One filled with love, joy, peace,
hope, and equality. Thanks to Jonathan E. Steadman, an
outrageously successful financier. Who holds a deep compassion for
ALL of humanity.
Steadman’s strong moral conscience is complemented by his razor-sharp discernment. As evidenced by the location of his cotton
enterprise. An isolated complex of modest stature, located
several miles east of a small town-- known as Thomasville.
Steadman already knows what the pioneering factory owners of the
“Industrial Revolution” in England-- will later learn for
themselves. An efficient and productive workforce requires a
peaceful and harmonious environment.
However, this cannot be achieved until the required life-sustaining elements have been comfortably met. Whereby each
worker is afforded sufficient food, rest and adequate shelter
between shifts.
With humanity’s basic needs fulfilled and a modicum of human
dignity left intact, the mind is then set free. Thus enabling
the individual, to effectuate their role on the map of destiny.
To outsiders, Steadman’s quirky philosophy on the treatment of
his slaves was-- for the most part, met with indifference.
Since the larger plantations in the surrounding area yielded
far greater profits. Consequently, Steadman was rarely
challenged, on what was viewed as “The harmless eccentricities
of a neighboring cotton farmer”.
Notwithstanding, those belonging to Steadman’s inner circle of
trust were far more discerning. Having fully recognized the
hidden root beneath his business ideology. The deeper facet of
Biblical Truth, as expressed in Matthew 7:12.
For this unassuming gentleman of 35 years, refused to
participate in the feigned rituals-- of bogus religious
showmanship. Such as those exhibited, by the surrounding
Methodist and Baptist institutions.
Per Contra, he shuddered with abhorrence, at the contumacious
arrogance of these sanctimonious theologians. Those who
willingly distorted scripture, in order to vindicate this
heinous crime. The spurious justification, for the systematic
persecution of a vulnerable sector of humanity.
Steadman vowed that come what may, he would offer himself as a
beacon of light and protection. Risking life and limb to save as
many casualties as possible-- from this historical sea of
darkness.
Nonetheless, he was under no illusions regarding the precarious
circumstances, surrounding his benevolent undertakings. Indeed,
this lowly cotton farm would soon face even greater dangers.
Assuming the role of a pivotal node in the underground
resistance; rapidly sweeping south.
