Synopsis/Details
Eighteen-year-old Misha Dane wants to break free of the poor LA suburb where she grew up. She's scared she'll wind up like her recently divorced parents and is desperate for her life to mean something. Her nineteen-year-old boyfriend, Glenn, feels the same. He aspires to be a top photographer, while Misha has entered the new TV singing contest "America's Next Big Star," hoping to win a record deal with producer, manager, and show judge Hugo Dalton (46). When she makes the final of the competition, she only needs to defeat her rival Nikki Cameron (20) but, instead, collapses on stage and reveals to all that she's pregnant.
Fifteen years later, Nikki Cameron is the world's biggest pop singer and is dating movie star Brett Ryan (29), while Misha is a frustrated stay-at-home mom with four kids and her now-husband Glenn is a poorly paid real estate photographer. Their relationship is in a bad way, they constantly bicker, and when Glenn forgets to bring home a cake for their eldest daughter, Beth's, 15th birthday party, Misha even contemplates divorce.
After getting drunk with her friend, and fellow mom, Judy, Misha climbs into an Uber to find nutty children's entertainer -- and part-time Uber driver -- Fairy Phoebe, who she had met at a kid's party earlier that day. Incredibly, Phoebe turns out to be a real fairy and grants Misha a wish to see what her life would've been like if she'd won the competition.
The following morning Misha wakes up in an expensive hotel bedroom in downtown LA. She is now the most famous person on the planet, and, lying in the enormous bed beside her, is Brett Ryan.
Thinking it must be a dream, Misha flees but, outside, is mobbed by fans and paparazzi and, in an attempt to get away, knocks over Susie (27), a fangirl who somehow senses she's not the real Misha Dane.
Misha finds Fairy Phoebe, who reveals that, in this reality, she didn't get pregnant, which resulted in her winning the contest and that, for some reason, she and Glenn broke up. Meanwhile, on Misha's phone, a photograph of her family is slowly disappearing, and Phoebe explains that she will no longer be able to return to her former life once the photo is gone. Misha is frantic, but Phoebe reassures her she'll be back tomorrow to check up on her before promptly disappearing, and Misha passes out.
After coming to, Misha discovers that Brett is now her boyfriend, Hugo is her manager, she has a personal assistant named Nell (28), and she is booked to perform at the Grammys tomorrow night. Worryingly, Nell also comments on how unusually nice she seems, and Misha realizes that, in this life, she's not such a great person.
That night she attends the premiere of Brett's new movie and, while walking into the theatre, spots Susie, who is now mounting a one-woman protest claiming Misha is a fake.
Following the film, Brett asks Misha to marry him -- having been urged on by Hugo, who believes it will be good for Brett's career. But Misha flees the theatre, leaving behind a heartbroken Brett and a furious Hugo.
Outside, Misha drags Susie into a waiting limo to grill her about what she knows and Susie reveals her mother was a clairvoyant. She didn't think she had the gift, but somehow -- when Misha touched her – she could tell that something was amiss. They touch again, and Susie is able to "see" Misha's entire other life and realizes Misha is just a regular mom.
Susie, whose girlfriend has recently dumped her, longs for a family of her own and wonders why Misha would want to leave hers. Misha explains her rocky relationship with Glenn and that she is even questioning whether she should change things back. Susie, however, is adamant she must. When Misha tells her that Phoebe will return tomorrow, Susie asks Misha if spending the rest of tonight living the life of a superstar might be enough to satisfy her.
The pair go to an exclusive nightclub, where Nell tracks them down, and when Misha introduces her to Susie, there is an obvious attraction. But their night is disrupted when Misha bumps into Glenn. In this life, he is a world-class photographer and has with him Elsa Jensen (27), a Victoria's Secret model who Misha is horrified to learn is his fiancée. She then begs Glenn to tell her why they split up, and he reveals it was because she had an affair.
Devastated, Misha realizes she can no longer change things back. She and Glenn have both achieved their dreams, and it would be unfair to ruin his "perfect" life. When Susie raises the question of her kids, Misha believes this is better for them than watching their parents get divorced, as she did. They argue the point, until Misha demands to be left alone.
Later, Brett appears and drags a now very drunk Misha to a table, where their waitress is none other than Nikki Cameron. Misha's nasty side now rears its ugly head, as Misha humiliates Nikki in front of Brett, who feels sorry for her. She then tells Brett she will marry him -- before promptly passing out.
On the morning of the Grammys, Fairy Phoebe returns, and Misha informs her that she's staying. Surprised, Phoebe reminds Misha that, if she changes her mind, she only has until her family photo disappears.
But, Misha has embraced her new life and is now acting like the bitch that everyone remembers. She even yells at Nell, who continues to be confused by her erratic behavior. Meanwhile, Hugo, overjoyed that his two biggest clients are getting married, informs Misha that she and Brett are due on morning TV to announce their engagement.
On the show, Misha is seemingly happy with her decision, but while watching her on TV, Susie is convinced she has to stop her, and Glenn has a tinge of regret.
That night, on her way to the Grammys, Susie begs Misha to reconsider, but she refuses, and after she leaves, Nell asks Susie to tell her exactly what's going on…
In the limo, Misha watches her photo slowly disappearing, then suddenly forces the car to stop. Out on the street, she runs up to Judy and her happy family, who are all getting ice cream. Misha gets emotional at the sight of them. They simply can't believe Misha Dane knows who they are. But soon, a crowd forms and Misha is forced to flee. Back in the limo, Brett comments on how happy Judy looked and hopes he and Misha can have kids someday -- off handily remarking that family is what's really important.
Backstage at the Grammys, Misha has had an epiphany and tells Brett she can no longer marry him. Hugo is enraged but, with the photograph almost gone, Misha is now desperate to get to Phoebe. Then, while running towards the exit, she bumps into Glenn, who, she is thrilled to discover, has always felt like his life was wrong and wishes it had turned out differently.
When Hugo catches up to her, he is shocked to see Glenn and accidentally reveals it was he who spread the rumors about Misha's affair. He wanted to get rid of Glenn, convinced their relationship was hurting her career. Furious, Misha punches Hugo then finally admits to Glenn that their family is what really gives her life meaning.
But Hugo isn't finished. As Misha continues her escape, he manages to take hold of her... but is knocked unconscious by Nell. She and Susie have returned to help.
A high-speed chase from the paparazzi ensues as the girls rush Misha to Phoebe. They make it to her fairy workshop, but it's too late. The picture is gone, and Phoebe is unable to change it back, or she'll lose her job.
But Misha begs Phoebe, admitting she'll never be happy without her family. Phoebe relents and sends Misha back to the same morning two days ago, where she awakes in her old bedroom. Overjoyed, she rushes to the kitchen to find Glenn, who has cooked a cake for Beth's birthday, and they kiss.
At that moment, Judy arrives for the party with… Susie and Nell. It turns out they are old friends of Judy's visiting from back east and, in this life, are a couple with a daughter. Upon touching her, Susie asks Misha if they've ever met before.
Finally, Phoebe arrives with the news that she is not permitted to perform magic for six months, but, thankfully, she still has her Uber job. Misha invites her in, and they all sing happy birthday to Beth.
