Synopsis/Details
The film opens by introducing each character through their internal monologues, revealing their warped philosophies born from their pasts. Maryi struggles with her mother's addiction, Lavell deals drugs while caring for Justin, Mathew preaches while indulging in his vices, Steven acts on his racist impulses under the guise of justice, and Max asserts his dominance. The initial plot points establish the characters' current lives and their underlying motivations. Jarvis carries out a hit, revealing his cold-blooded nature and his connection to Max. The characters' paths begin to intertwine more explicitly. Steven investigates the hit Jarvis committed, unknowingly interacting with Justin. Maryi seeks solace in her relationship with Lavell, unaware of their true familial connection. Justin, in his drug-addled state, has a confrontation with Steven, which leads to Steven revealing hints about Justin's past and Lavell's involvement. This leads Justin to confront Lavell, who, under pressure, reveals the shocking truth about Justin's molestation by his father and Mathew, and Lavell's own role in his father's death, orchestrated by Max. Maryi and Lavell's relationship deepens, setting the stage for a devastating revelation. The climax sees the unraveling of all major secrets. Maryi discovers her incestuous relationship with Lavell, leading her to murder both him and her mother, Shavon, in a fit of rage and despair. Justin confronts and kills Mathew, seeking his own twisted form of justice. Jarvis, realizing Max's ultimate manipulation (that Max is his true father and orchestrated the death of his adoptive father and his brother), confronts Max. In a brutal shootout, Jarvis kills Max, but is mortally wounded and takes his own life. Steven, the corrupt officer, is arrested, but his racist ideology remains unshakeable, even in prison, where he faces a violent comeuppance from white supremacists who, despite agreeing with his actions, still see him as "a nigger." The film concludes with Maryi succumbing to drug addiction, mirroring her mother's fate, and Justin, though initially finding peace, ultimately succumbing to his trauma and taking his own life. The final scenes reveal the origins of Max's, Lavell's, Jarvis', Maryi's, Justin's, and Steven's twisted worldviews through flashbacks to their childhoods, showing how trauma and learned behaviors perpetuated the cycle of violence and self-destruction.
