Synopsis/Details
BISHOP JOEL DUNCAN, Christ’s Cowboy, has life made. A mansion, a hit Christian show, a beautiful family, and even a private Jet. Despite the occasional lone-wolf protestor at his show, Joel’s life is good. And it’s all thanks to God.
But then Joel’s Jet crashes. Two people die in the wreck and one other enters a coma. Joel is the only one to survive, relatively unharmed. He did die for nine minutes, but he was resuscitated before any brain damage could set in. But Joel cannot stop thinking about those nine minutes. He was dead and he saw… nothing. How could he, a man who’s devoted his entire life to God, not even be presented with a bright light. There’s only one conclusion. Joel was wrong and there is not God.
Going through the motions after the crash is difficult. Joel holds all the guilt of the crash, but no longer has God to guide him through the pain. He can’t even talk to his wife and producer, MARINA. How can he? God is everything to them… to her. Joel decides there’s one person he can talk to, the young woman who had interrupted his previous sermon, Bobbi Tejedor.
Bobbi is not happy to find The Good Bishop Joel Duncan standing at her door, the man who killed her mother. Not physically killed her, but sucked her dry of all her money paid back in false promises and “prayers”. Well, the prayers didn’t stop the cancer. Bobbi makes it clear that if Joel ever comes to her apartment again, he’ll be sorry.
The burden Joel feels erupts at the memorial for the victims of the jet accident, when he can’t finish his eulogy. Joel admits to Marina his doubts about God, to which Marina tries to show Joel that God is everywhere. However, Joel cannot stop thinking about Bobbi. About how much she hates him. So Joel does some digging and discovers what he had done. It breaks his heart. He needs to make things right.
Joel visits Bobbi again, who makes good on her promise and tases the Bishop. This does not deter Joel and he convinces Bobbi that he wants to change. He just needs… some guidance. So she tells him how he can start. The next day, Joel is back on his stage, ready to preach the good word. He’s convinced everyone, including Marina, that he can do this. They just don’t know what “do this” means. Because apparently, it means getting back on to stage, telling all the viewers at home that God isn’t real, and then burning a bible in the middle of his Church.
