SKYE, 30s, chocolate kissed, structured and logical, BROOKE, 30s, carefree, adventurous, and virtually identical to Skye own and operate a kid’s party planning company, where they recount their ’10 List’ adventures to a potential client. The 10 List is a wish list of things or places they’d like to do, see or go. They complete the list every few years, with their next one scheduled annually.
While at a local movie theater, a man opens fire killing and wounding many movie-goers, including both Skye and Brooke. The twins are taken to the hospital, where they both fight for their lives. Thanks to a heart transplant, Skye barely pulls through; Brooke’s injuries ultimately take her life.
A year later, Skye has healed physically. Her emotional wounds remain and her parents harbor a secret. After being mistaken for Brooke, enduring some disturbing dreams, and hearing reports of a fellow survivor attempting suicide, Skye decides to take their planned ’10 List’ trip, even if for the first time, she'll have to do it alone. Skye prepares for her trip, sends a letter to thank her anonymous organ donor, and sets out on her solo journey.
Through several locations and a few new friends, she finds the emotional healing she needs, despite Brooke’s absence. She’s forced to return home early after a potentially fatal episode concerning her new heart. At home, she finds out who her organ donor is – Brooke. Her parents have held this truth fearing the knowledge would destroy Skye. This revelation sets off a literal and figurative bomb inside her. With time and the cathartic release, Skye makes peace with her new heart, sheds her survivor’s guilt, and releases some of her emotional pain, ultimately resigned to press on and live a full life.
