Synopsis/Details
THE GREAT OBSESSION is based on the best-selling book SHOCKING STORIES by the same author.
Lucy, a single mother, made many mistakes in her past and is obsessed with keeping her daughter from doing the same. She fears seeing her daughter, Maria, follow some of the same patterns that led her down this path.
In the opening sequence, Lucy, pregnant with Maria, tries to win back her husband by gifting him a car. Through a series of unfortunate events, her efforts wind up accidentally killing him, so her daughter now grows up without a father.
Twenty years later, Lucy gets a heart attack when she finds out her daughter got a job, likely because she slept with the boss.
Two male protagonists, Sam and Bill, go to “There’s Something About Mary” lengths to watch Maria from afar and earn her attention and love.
The story consists of an ensemble of characters weaving in and out of each other’s lives, culminating in the payoff of Bill picking up Maria at the end after Bill had stalked her with her favorite song blasting out of his taxicab at the beginning.
The director and writer Matthew Richmond (Loveseat, 2013) wrote: “The Great Obsession” is one of the most original, inventive, and daring screenplays I have read.
