CATHERINE WILSON is a successful English human rights lawyer. When she receives a call telling her that the father she has not seen since she was six has passed away with no other next of kin known about, she decides to travel back to Jackson Wyoming to settle his affairs. Wanting her daughter AVA to see the place she was born she decides to take her with her.
SHERIFF BOB SCHAEFFER tells Catherine that her father had lived in a homeless shelter for many years and has left few possessions. Touched by the story of how he has lived his final lonely years, Catherine decides to stay a little longer and arrange the funeral.
They are unaware that they are being carefully watched and tracked.
Taking a trip around Jackson and the surrounding countryside and forests, Ava is taken by a number of signs for 'The Best Ice Cream Parlor in the World' and bugs Catherine to take her. Eventually giving in, they go to the parlor which is strangely deserted.
They are jumped by a group of masked men who abduct Ava and knock Catherine out with chloroform. When Catherine wakes there is no sign of her girl. She phones for help and soon Schaeffer arrives. The two of them drive to a forest where Schaeffer tells Catherine a demonic cult is known to operate and sacrifice young girls, including his own niece some years before. Along with tracker dog CALLIE, Schaeffer and Catherine venture into the forest as a storm breaks, looking for the cult and to rescue Ava. Catherine must make sense of the nightmares about the forest that have haunted her for many years and Schaeffer must finally put an end to the cult who have scarred his own family so badly.
When Schaeffer is badly injured, Catherine is left on her own to track down the cult and rescue her girl before she is sacrificed. Tracking them to an underground cave, Catherine faces impossible odds to save Ava and must dig deep and draw on a courage and cold-blooded ruthlessness she never knew she possessed in order to save her daughter.
