Synopsis/Details
Raised by her grandmother and ailing grandfather, Katrina, a feisty 12-year-old girl, befriends a neighbor who takes pity on her after her father was declared MIA in Vietnam and her mother—unable to cope—abdicated her role as parent. From the time she was six, he began leaving little treasures, in a hiding place between two brittle bricks along the wall that separates their backyards. Our story begins shortly before her neighbor, Mr. C, is moved out of his house and taken to an “old folks’ home.” Instead of his usual trinket, he leaves a different type of treasure in the form of a clue. Along with her two best friends, Kat solves the puzzle her neighbor leaves behind and discovers a message exposing the real reason for her grandfather’s illness and the cause of his chronic and debilitating cough. The three kids set out on a journey to expose her grandfather’s employer and the Company’s attempt to cover up the illegal use of toxins that are poisoning its workers.

The Writer: Donna Connolly

Donna Connolly grew up in Los Angeles, California during the 1960’s and the height of the Vietnam War. Even though the country was embroiled in political and social unrest, she remembers fondly the simple and care-free lifestyle spent with her siblings and friends who raced home after school each day, changed into “play clothes” and roamed the neighborhood until the streetlights came on. Coming of age during the Women’s Movement, Black Power Movement, and Gay Rights Movement, has provided Donna with a plethora of entertaining narratives and a love of storytelling in all forms: poetry, plays, screenplays and prose. In her late teens, she backpacked through Europe and spent time in East… Go to bio
