Everything that happens in THE NHUMAN is born out of the lead character (Warren) and his actions, so in that sense, because he’s so critical to every part of the story, it’s rather cool that he’s the type of character who remains unpredictable all throughout. Bottom line – during my first reading – I just never could anticipate where this story was headed, and at no point did I ever predict what was going to happen next. The ending is totally awesome with NICK being XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (spoiler), and there’s a chilling sense of foreboding that’s given off by those final moments on the page – just imagine what a visually inclined filmmaker/storyteller might do with this stuff.
When Warren is XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, it’s genuinely nightmarish and absolutely revolting. Your description of what constitutes his body is awesomely nasty and I think that people would be blown away by seeing this fully done up either via photo-real CGI or man-in-suit or a combination of moth (or perhaps motion capture). It’s also NEW – the way you describe Warren after the “accident” and the serum has taken a hold – it’s genuinely creepy and NEW and I think special effects technicians would love to play around in this space. And again, you offer up something that feels fresh and original within the creature space – not an easy thing to do in this very-saturated marketplace!
The ideas of evolution and corporate greed are smartly balanced against the forward-moving mechanism of your story and your solid sense of narrative drive and urgency, and the big set-pieces of action are well-handled on the page. You have an excellent way with visual descriptions, so it’s always easy to get into your work on that level – and then when considered in terms of what a director might bring to the table – you have serious groundwork that feels ripe and ready to be exploited. I will say that there’s a bit of an “action lull” in the mid-section, and while it’s important to allow time for the story and the characters to breathe, you do want to always keep up that great sense of momentum that you build from the very beginning.
THE NHUMAN is one of those over the top yet still grounded ideas that works best when fully contemplated in terms of a large-scope narrative. The final 30 pages are packed with dramatic incident and the final moments are haunting in what the story is suggesting for all of humanity. I want to see this explored even further, possibly ramping up the conspiracy/corporate/government angle, and really drawing from all available resources.
