Synopsis/Details
When a renowned mystery writer is murdered, it's up to his biggest fan, and plucky concierge, Cleo, to solve a mystery stranger than fiction, aboard the world's second most famous travelling hotel, The Nomad.
Hotel concierge Cleo’s day-to-day aboard the world's second most famous travelling hotel, The Nomad, is busy enough when dealing with the eclectic bunch of regulars, learning Spanish from polymath housekeeper, Idania, and keeping helpless bellboy, Karl awake. When renowned mystery writer and Cleo’s idol Barnarby Harcourt turns up dead in his room, the perfectionist hotel manager, Thaddeus Crunch, tasks her with finding the murderer - oh, and an anonymous hotel inspector who’s also on board. All before they reach Rome.
Cleo starts her investigation, wide-eyed, and enjoying herself maybe a bit too much. She begins hearing Harcourt’s smarmy voice in her head, which becomes an annoyance, undermining her naive decisions. Much to Crunch’s dismay, word gets out about Harcourt’s demise and the guests are confined to their rooms. Cleo interviews them in turn, but it becomes impossible to rule anyone in or out. It could be any one of: The Duchess, who no one likes, the Soap Brothers, career criminals on holiday, Lecomte, a slimy gambler who always collects, and Mr. Tick Grader, the latest arrival - just what is he writing in his notepad? After further investigation of the crime scene, Cleo finds Harcourt has nothing of worth, except a briefcase full of writing, which she gives to Karl to read for clues. With little progress made, Cleo feels the pressure to solve the case. With an obvious motive, she presses Lecomte, noticing his newly acquired green jeweled cufflinks. Distressed, Lecomte confesses an altercation between himself and Harcourt, that resulted in Harcourt sustaining a potentially fatal injury - case closed.
While Crunch is satisfied and pops champagne in the dining room with the guests, Cleo is uneasy. It doesn’t add up. She goes to check on a detained Lecomte, but he’s dead - the real murderer has struck again and his cufflinks are missing. Devastated, Cleo informs everyone, she got it wrong - it must be a member of staff. Confident that the murderer is not among the guests, they barricade themselves in the dining room. Ruining his moment, Crunch fires Cleo. Karl informs her that Harcourt’s writing is awful, he couldn’t have written his books. Her world crumbling around her, Cleo has a heated argument with an apparition of Harcourt. She now sees her idol as the fraud he is. Fired up and with new resolve, Cleo ignores Crunch and interviews the staff. It comes to light that Harcourt stole his most famous novel from Idania, who was published in her home country. And Idania’s brother Camilo has been on board, using an alias, to retrieve The Green Hope jewel, his country's most precious treasure, stolen by Harcourt and cut down to be worn as cufflinks on his cheap suit. After some quick deductions, Cleo finds Camilo in the engine room, about to dispose of the bodies. After a confrontation, where Camilo tries to reason with her - things got out of hand - Cleo chases him through the hotel to the roof. Camilo drops Cleo over the side and she’s caught by the guests on the dining room balcony below. Idania arrives and talks her brother down. In Rome, Camilo is arrested and Cleo secretly slips Idania the cufflinks, to do the right thing. A few months later, our heroes meet up. They read a surprisingly good review of The Nomad. On board, Cleo is the lead writer for murder mystery-themed holidays on The Nomad. Crunch is overjoyed at a string of positive, yet not-perfect reviews.
