Synopsis/Details
Reid and Cassie Laramie, a husband and wife house-flipping team, purchase a dilapidated old house for well below its market value, as the previous owner was a recluse whose distant family simply wants it off their hands. Shortly after, they move in with their young son, Tony, to begin renovations on the home. Soon, strange occurrences start to happen in the house. Several doors slam shut on their own, Cassie hears Tony laughing and seemingly talking to someone named "Danny," and the family hear voices coming from the attic and the sink drain. Several nights in, Cassie leaves the kitchen for a split second while cleaning up from dinner, only to return to find all of the plates and cups stacked in an unnatural pyramid on the counter... all of which come violently crashing down moments later. Undeterred, a crew of workmen including carpenter Rodrigo begin work on repairing the home. When ripping up the floorboards in an upstairs bedroom, they find a child's possessions, including a baseball glove with the name Danny embroidered onto it. At the same time while ripping up carpet in the living room, the team finds satanic and occult symbols written on the wood below. Immediately after, a worker is attacked by an unseen force and is thrown out of a second story window. At the hospital, Rodrigo insists the family conduct an exorcism on the house using his uncle, a former priest. Cassie and Reid refuse, saying they don't believe in such things. Back at the house that night, Tony is violent picked up and thrown around by an unseen force, prompting Cassie and Reid to enlist Rodrigo's help. The next day, the priest comes to the house and attempts the exorcism with the family. As he walks throughout the house, he says that he senses a child's presence. However, he is soon possessed and kills himself with a nail gun after screaming "the boy is mine" in a demonic voice. As the police remove the body, one of them reveals that years prior, the child of the previous owner disappeared without a trace. At a local library, they research the story and learn that th boy's name was Danny, and while his father, Edward Jane, was the main suspect, charges were never filed because a body was never recovered. After spending the night in a motel, the family tracks down Danny's mother, Barbara Hodges, 70s, who lives nearby. She reveals that after divorcing Edward, he became involved in the occult, leading her to believe that he sacrificed Danny to a demon named Moloch in an attempt to secure eternal life. Reid and Cassie reconnect with Rodrigo and beg for his help, but he refuses until they mention the name Moloch. He explains that he was warned as a child, as the demon feeds on the souls of children and doesn't just possess homes like a ghost, but "marks" children and gets them to kill themselves so he can harvest their souls. Just then, Tony becomes possessed and nearly stabs himself with a tool, but Rodrigo uses his cross necklace to temporarily weaken the demon. Rodrigo explains that the only way to break the curse is to free the soul of a child already trapped by the demon. They determine that Danny's ghost is still trapped in the house because Edward killed him after he was marked rather than allowing the demon to possess him into killing himself, meaning the demon owns the soul but did not consume it. At the house, Tony connects with Danny's spirit and asks where he was buried. However, Moloch soon possesses him. Reid and Cassie hold him back and tell him they love him, temporarily bringing him back, just enough to say "basement" before Moloch again takes over. While the possessed Tony continues to fight with his parents, Rodrigo manages to dig up the bones and perform last rites, freeing Danny's soul. The demon then leaves Tony's body. The family sells the house and moves out of town, and Barbara is able to finally give Danny a proper burial.
