Synopsis/Details
Eddie Turner is an a naturally-anxious 12-year-old who lives with her more confident sister, Cynthia. Perhaps a bit too confident. She loves all things wiccan and wild, and loves to show it off. Eddie isn't as comfortable with this, and neither most of their town. One day, Cynthia takes her appreciation for this world a bit too far, and gets punished for it by their mother, who just so happens to be a police officer, too. In a fit of rage, Cynthia storms off into the night, looking to permanently separate herself from their family. Eddie worries for her sister's safety, and so he too flees to find her. Big mistake.
Through the dark woods just beyond their home, Eddie eventually finds her sister. She just so happens to be in a place that isn't too friendly to him. He discovers a sprawling landscape full of folklore monsters living right in front of his very eyes. And Cynthia turns out to be one of them because she happens to be real witch. And all the monsters hate normal humans like Eddie, too.
A leader of this place, Grandmother Nokemis, decides to task Eddie and Cynthia with a job to erase this error. They have to find out who would be in charge of ruling this place in this, and the next generation. If they don't do it, their reputations and lives will face the burning stake. Willing but nervous as ever, the siblings agree.
This slingshots these two on a small-scale journey across their town and it's underground society. They come across curious people like Citlali, the desk-lady of the town's historical center who also helps other monsters find their way to the other world here. But they also meet some dangerous ones, too, like the lion-like Beast of Truro. All of this happens while the charismatic sheriff of their town is hot on their trail.
A risky and fantastical path is laid before Eddie and his sister. Fear, compassion, hatred, and love encompass their adventure, and all will be put to the test. Perspectives will change, lives will be put at risk, and yes, there is a sasquatch named Craig.
