Synopsis/Details
This is the UK in 1984 under Soviet occupation. Homosexuality does not officially exist – but for Winston, a man with a loving wife (Minato) and a baby on the way, it's about to become the most real thing in his life, with devastating consequences.
Winston starts an affair with Sammy; it seems an impossible world has finally been made real for him. However, the state has other ideas.
As the two men become close, they start to take risks that eventually lead to betrayal. Sammy's attempt to secure the cover he needs is shattered – the men are given a chance to part ways, no harm done – but they can't agree to this.
Finally, they are snared. Morozev – a man determined to prove that homosexuality exists as an illness and can be cured – captures them.
Against a backdrop of Soviet occupation, the encroaching AIDS crisis, family betrayal, and a policy of ethnic cleansing, the characters fight to determine their worlds.
Morozov's fanaticism clashes with Winston and Sammy's desire until the final resolution leaves Winston with a child he's allowed to love – but to get it, he must do something terrible.
