You Won't Abandon Me

Umar wakes up to pour a cup of tea, when he sees a notification on his daughter in law’s phone that reads: ““When are we bringing Abah to the Nursing home today?” After overcoming his initial feelings of shock, Umar feels angry. However, instead of confronting his family members, he decides to sabotage their efforts to send him to the nursing home instead. His first sabotage attempt was to hide his daughter in law’s work briefcase. Unfortunately, she finds it almost immediately. She then leaves for work. Undeterred, Umar does not let up on his attempts. The scene cuts to early evening, where his son and daughter in law come home. They walk into Umar’s room to find him sick. Umar’s son, Ariff, asks him what he is sick with. In a flashback, it is revealed that Umar is faking his illness. Ariff asks him whether he can still go out, because he wants to bring Umar out. Umar shakes his head weakly. Umar’s son and daughter in law leave the room. He eavesdrops on their conversation, but he can only pick up bits and pieces of the conversation. Ariff insists on bringing him today, while the daughter is a bit apprehensive. Completely disheartened by his son’s apparent disregard of him, Umar gives up, and tells them that he feels better suddenly and they can bring him out. Umar is in the car with his son and daughter in law. He reflects on his life so far, and how it has led up to this point. He consoles himself, alone in the backseat of the car, thinking that maybe life at the nursing home may be better than he expects. However, his body betrays his thoughts and tears fall down his face. He quickly wipes the tears. When they reach, he is shocked to find that the nursing home was decorated like a birthday party for him. Umar sees his friends, and they begin to wish him a happy birthday. Finally remembering that it was his birthday, he begins to cry, embracing his son.
