Plaid

Plaid
A man dressed in a horrible plaid outfit begins to bond with a flashy woman
at a party after being ignored by the rest of the guests.

The worst experience one can have is a party where you don’t fit in.

We’ve all been there – literally: a night when everyone around you is in full-blast mix and mingle mode… but the only thing you want to do is sit still and avoid the fray.

Meet Guy. Stocky and well worn in years, Guy’s neither the social butterfly nor fashionable type. Dressed in plaid, there’s no way Guy can fit in at a house party. Nor is he particularly good at making friends.

Though he tries to make eye contact as people pass, none return his interest. Even AFTER some of them “go bump” in the night:

A girl falls into his lap. Laughs drunkenly.

GUY
Hey! How’s it--

She is pulled up by her boyfriend. Leaves without responding.

GUY
Going...

Someone bumps into him. Spills a drink all over his shirt. The person walks off without acknowledging.

GUY
Excuse me? Oh, hey, no problem!
(wipes his shirt)
I’m fine, it barely soaked me.

He sighs. This sucks.

No kidding!

But Guy’s party experience is seconds from taking an odd turn, locking eyes with a woman in a glittery red pantsuit. Talk about an odd couple! But very quickly it becomes clear… unlike anyone else at this shindig, Mystery Woman’s got Guy’s welfare in mind:

WOMAN
I said, “are you okay?”

GUY
Oh, sure, I’m great! It’s honestly refreshing.
If he wouldn’t have spilled it, I would’ve done it myself.
I’m burning up from all the dancing I’m not doing.
(to everyone)
Anyone else want to empty a glass, I’m your guy!

WOMAN
Sounds like you’re having a great time.

GUY
A kid wiped his boogers on me earlier.

Did we mention? Guy’s not the smoothest talker in da house tonight.

Still… these two seem to have met cute. Soon, they’re bonding over what (or who) brought each of them here, and agreeing about all the places they’d rather be.

Is this the start of a beautiful friendship? Maybe even an epic romance for the ages? Or, is there more to this coupling than meets the eye?

An adorably sweet and unpredictable short, Brandi Self’s Plaid is effortlessly shootable. All a director needs is two chemistry compatible actors – tossed into a party they both rather ignore!
