The Big Reveal

The Big Reveal
A gender reveal party winds up having more revelations than anyone expected.

Not every script need be a 20+ page magnus opus about the human condition. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course!

Nope, sometimes what audiences need is a cute, sassy, sardonic riff. OK, maybe with a TINY bit of “human condition” subtext thrown in.

Directors: if that’s what you’re looking for in your next project, The Big Reveal pulls that off in just TWO pages, and just one scene. Talk about a breezy shoot!

A satiric look on that now cloying suburban trend of throwing gender reveal parties, Reveal packs a double-entrendre into its short title and premise.

At the center of THIS shin-dig are Adam and Lori, a young couple about to be parents. Middle class to their Old Navy cores, Adam and Lori have all the trappings: a house with a white picket fence, and soon to be: a baby boy. Or girl?

Standing in front of friends and family, Adam and Lori soak in the attention – poised to announce who they’ll be “welcoming” to the world soon:

LORI
As y'all know, we like to keep things simple.
So instead of some over-the-top reveal,
Adam is just gonna read the results from our doctor aloud.

What – no fireworks?!?  Well, not the TRADITIONAL kind. But as for social…

On cue, Lori’s little sister Beth stumbles out of the house, extremely drunk (guess Lori and Adam have a well stocked bar, too?)  Beth’s holding an envelope – one printed with the blessed news.

Or does it? Things are… about to get interesting. Amusing, too.

A teeny, tiny short that resembles one of the GOOD SNL skits, Big Reveal is sure to shine with the right comedic actors. Find ones capable of breathing social satire into every beat, line and gesture… and the “reveal” will be the accolades you bring home!

About The Writer

Christopher Stewart's picture

I am a retired paramedic and a lifelong movie fan. As a random hobby, I taught myself how to write screenplays by reading thousands of produced movie scripts. Since then, I've been writing short scripts with a focus on comedy and horror (or both at the same time). I also enjoy helping others polish their work and doing uncredited re-writes. To me, a great script always finds its best footing with multiple drafts and the input of those who want to see it succeed. Iron strengthens iron.Read more
