I'm sure you've all come across cases where you needed a rough calculation of what a budget (eg. Dr. Strangelove in 1964, $1.8 mllion) would be in today's dollars? You know, when a producer says they want a movie just like 'such-and-such', and it's some older movie.

When Nixon took us off the Gold Standard, inflation or perhaps more accurately currency devaluation became a real thing...a thief in the night. As a point of historical interest, time was the Federal Reserve actually printed extra dollars (fiat currency). Now they just make digital entries on digital ledgers. Scary stuff.
