How about a bit of fun - how would you transform this nursery rhyme?

I was singing a nursery Rhyme to my very young grandson and I realized, that you can have a bit of fun changing some of the words... I played around with Five little Ducks. ( and no... I did not sing my version to him :P)

I will only write the first and last verse as it is repetitive. What can you come up with?

In case you have forgotten...

Five little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother duck said, "quack quack quack quack,"
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks ...
Three little ducks ...
Two little ducks ...
One little duck ...

So sad Mother duck went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother duck said, "quack quack quack quack,"
And all of the five little ducks came back.

My version... came to mind without too much thought. Just keeping it simple :)

Five little soldiers went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Sgt major said, "retreat retreat retreat”
But only four little soldiers came back.

--

So sad Sgt Major went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Sgt major said, "come back come back come back,"
but all five little soldiers laid on their back.

Have some fun :)

Hi Elisabeth, I recently cannibalized "Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross" for a wedding card. He, an american, she born to Indian parents, a very lovely couple.

He will ride a white horse to Danbury town

to wed a fine lady in a bright Hindi gown

He'll put a ring on her finger and bells on her toes

So she shall have music wherever she goes.

I 'm not familiar with Five Little Ducks.  but I love the Six Little Kittens,( who lost their mittens etc) nursery rhyme.

A while back I took a nursery rhyme at face value. If you're into horror, check out 'In the Red'; my interpretation of 'One, Two, Buckle my Shoe'. In the Red by John Staats | Script Revolution

Hi John, whoa, what a monster is Jack. Have you noticed how often the name Jack turns up in nursery rhymes and fairy tales?. Poor Little Red Riding Hood, either the big bad wolf swallows her whole, or she's butchered and made into sausages!

The storyboard is very effective. (btw. the DNR has warned campers that once the snow melts they could find the beaches littered with dead fish. Apparently, the freeze, thaw, cycles we've experienced have done the poor things in.)

Hello John,

I also chose a nursery rhyme for my horror 'Crow Fair'. It is surprising how spooky some rhymes are and 'Sing a song of sixpence', with an additional verse, was perfect for the ending.

Regards,

Alan

Hi Alan, your clever and suspenseful tale reminds me of a tv program I watched  years back, starring that master of the hooded stare, Bernard Hepton. It was about human sacrifice to ensure a good harvest. All the villagers were in on it. They seemed nice and normal on the surface, but were anything but come harvest time. Scary stuff!

Hello Elizabeth, thanks for your kind comments about Crow Fair. I am not familiar with the program starring Bernard Hepton, but would be very interested in watching it if you can remember the title. The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978), set in New England,  seems very much like it. If you haven't seen it, it is one to watch. Bette Davis is excellent as Widow Fortune.

Hi Alan, it was a 1970 Play for Today episode called "Robin Redbreast". I'll look up Bette Davis in The Dark Secret of Harvest Home.  Thanks for the tip! Elizabeth
