is it just me? – but over the last couple of weeks i've had this pop up a few times while i've been trying to get onto Script Revolution
504 Gateway Time-out
nginx
sure, it's a bit of a pain, but i'm not that fussed – i've always got something else to do while i wait a few minutes, hours or whatever, to do what i need to do
however, i am concerned that, if this issue is common and wide spread (i'm in Melbourne, Australia), it may damage Script Revolution's brand and reduce its effectiveness
No, it's not just you. I've had it 2-3 times in the past month, maybe. I do use SR extensively as a 'pitch source' for my stuff, and I put the script profile links into emails and LinkedIn messages, so if the site is down it is a concern. Yes, it always does come back in a few or several hours, though.
This is a big site to manage for CJ - let alone the other more important professional things he has going on - and sometimes things happen on the site that he doesn't know about till somebody mentions it. So, good on you to bring it up. Maybe it's just a setting to be tweaked!
Ironically, It's an issue since moving the whole site over to a new server with an updated operating system. Something has been causing the mysql service to flood, and I've been working on it trying to solve the issue. It is a lot better than it was just after the move and getting better all the time. I run monitoring systems to alert me, but there's little I can do when I'm asleep or away at the weekend. To get a bit technical, I'm trying to find a balance between cached and live processed data, which strains the server in different ways.
As ever, this is my baby and I have to wear every hat, so I can assure you all that there's nobody more frustrated with these kinds of issues than me.
Here's a handy website that I've been using for years. It saves me a lot of grief.

You just need a bouncer.
Could program some rules for greater efficiency if needed. Example: Green suit jacket = auto entry or Lily = 50% off cover charge Tuesdays.
You have my vote.
:D
appreciate all you do, CJ – best of luck!
Okay, I've doubled the RAM and CPU power of the server in the hope it stops this issue. Significant increase in cost but it's looking like the only solution.
I'm so sorry, It must have hurt, but, thank you.
thanks! fingers crossed
I've only noticed this once in the last two weeks, and that would have been around 2-3 a.m. CJ's time - if that helps any, to debug it.
I'm certainly narrowing the issue down now.
Pleased to say we went eleven days without the issue returning. I have now implemented better monitoring, so I should be notified if the site is down within minutes of it happening.

Lily - lol :)
Okay, I've finally gotten to the bottom of this. The issue is/was the sheer number of award levels that are still creeping in and how that impacts the server when it tries to build the Featured Scripts section of the site. The main problem is avoiding duplicate listings for scripts that have multiple awards and recommendations and the size of the database query required to address all those potential duplicates. Even having cut prestigious awards back to just Nicholl, AFF, and the various Stage 32 competitions, along with the Coverfly top 1%, 3%, and 10% tiers, it's still a huge slog for the server to go through those, and then through all the various coverage endorsements.
Therefore, I've had to make the Featured Section a lot tougher to get into with only award winners and Coverfly top 3% scripts applicable. To be honest, this was needed anyway, as the Featured Scripts section was getting massive.
Still not fully out the woods yet, but getting there.
CJ, I'm glad you got to the bottom of the technical problems. I'm a bit concerned about making Featured Scripts award winners only. I know, I'm throwing a big wrench in your system and not helping at all, for that, I apologize.
It's the wording that concerns me. You already have Award Winning scripts section. Isn't that just creating duplicates for award winning scripts under both Rockstars and Hot Scripts, essentially double hits per script? And (yes, I realize this is another wrench, sorry) what about Rockstar members who have zero interest in participating in contests/competitions?
Sorry, I worded that poorly. I meant to say that semi-finalists and scripts between 3% and 10% on Coverfly have had to be cut out the featured section as not to crash the server.
Ohhhh, thanks for the clearing that up!
Server crashed last night, less than twelve hours after turning the Featured Scripts block back on. I've had to take all competition and coverage referencing out for now.
CJ, unfortunate. Hang in there.
fyi – in case you didn't know CJ, i experienced another outage yesterday – hopefully it's the last of them – best of luck
That one was routine service maintenance, I believe.
