Synopsis/Details
Iris Garcia, 16, walks through her high school to stares. Being a New Waver in 1982, she's use to it.
She meets with friends- a subculture hodgepodge- Punks, Skinheads, New Wavers, Goths, and Mods. With best friend Maggie Cooper they discuss plans for the evening- staying all night in Hollywood to be first in line for David Bowie concert tickets when they go on sale in the morning.
After school, Iris goes home. Her father, Big Joe, and mother, Francine, moonlight as pro-wrestlers. She pockets a letter showing her horrible grades. Iris heads to her room. The letter falls.
Letter in hand, Big Joe angrily barges in, dressed in his wrestling mask and robe with "The Night Owl" emblazed on the back. He forbids her from going out. She pleads, but he decides that education is more important.
He leaves for his wrestling match then a shift at a factory. Undeterred, Iris sneaks out. Maggie waits in her car.
First stop is a New Wave dance club. Brandishing fake I.D.'s, the girls hit the dance floor. Charlie Cooper, Maggie's older punk rock brother whom Iris has a crush on is there.
The girls are kicked out and Iris sees Charlie leave with a girl.
Later they are at a burger stand. Bertha Sanchez is with her gang. Bertha is the school bully and wants to settle a perceived disrespect. Iris is terrified. She grabs a bottle and smashes it over Bertha's head. Before the gang can react, the girls run. A chase through streets and alleys ensues.
Daybreak finds the girls exiting trash dumpsters. Covered in filth the girls make for the ticket agency. They turn a corner and find it, as well as a line several blocks long.
Hours later, exhausted and disheveled they are next. They straighten themselves and walk to the window with as much dignity as they can muster. The Cashier places a sign in the window: SOLD OUT.
Defeated, the girls drive home.
Iris opens her crusted bloodshot eyes, and sees Big Joe, also going home. He does not see them.
Another race is on. Iris arrives before Big Joe. She is chased by a dog, gets cut on a fence, flops through her window, before literally crawling in bed.
Seconds later, Big Joe knocks. Iris pulls her blankets over. He enters and apologizes. He surprises her with 2 tickets for the concert.
Forgetting she's dressed, she leaps with joy. Seeing that she disobeyed him, Big Joe says that instead of taking Maggie, he'll be going with her.
Stunned, Iris can only cringe as he sings a Bowie song. His voice terrible. The lyrics, way off.
Her voice Off Screen- "Welcome to the 80's".
