Synopsis/Details
In an alternative reality where animals rule the world instead of humans, Private Investigator Charles Bateman (a chimpanzee) attends a consultation with a therapist (orangutan) because he feels so overwhelmed with his current life, thinking that both he and all animals are mentally sick, that he's planning on killing himself.
Charles, hired by a client, follows a badger into the zoo, where all the captive species are humans, and discovers that the badger is just another sick animal like many others who enjoy watching humans suffer.
Later that night he meets with Nancy, her husband, and daughter (dalmatians) for a lovely dinner at her house. During dinner, Charles hears the human woman Domitila - Nancy's pet - hum a beautiful song, as singing is all that humans can do with their voices. The song triggers something in Charles and he has a vision, in which he gets to see the original reality where humans are the masters and rule the world. In the vision he also sees Priscilla Marquardt (a lioness), the First Lady of Animal Republic, standing next to what appears to be a "crystal ball".
Deeply troubled by his vision, Charles seeks answers from a medium (a fly) and asks him about the nature of the vision. During the session, the fly looks into Charles’ vision and explains to him that what he's seen was not a dream or a delusion, but rather he saw into another parallel universe.
Determined to find the answer to his vision and its connection to the First Lady he finds an activist, Lauren Summers (an English cocker spaniel) who is fighting against meat consumption and species equality and diversity in the workplace and convinces her to partner up and work together against the government. He reveals later to his friend Nancy that his real plan is to escape this sickened world, which Nancy disapproves of.
Meanwhile, outside the presidential house, the president of Animal Republic, Wesley Marquardt (a lion) is giving a speech just to seduce the crowd with empty promises. After the speech he meets with his wife Priscilla and they both talk about getting rid of all the species they consider the weak element of society, such as vegans, hippies, pacificists, or anyone they deem a "troublemaker".
In a flashback, we see Charles during his time as a cop dealing with a Psycho baboon, who before killing himself by jumping off a cliff, reveals to him that he has seen "another world".
Lauren's husband Adam Summers (an African wild dog) discovers at work that the Food Control Bureau controlled by the government is approving chemicals that modify animal behavior, such as aggression.
Wesley tries to make a move by going to Congress to try to blackmail Senator and former friend Cornelius Hamilton (an elephant) to vote against the new law for species equality and meat consumption ban, in exchange for retrieving his lost nephew who’s been kidnapped and taken to the “Barren Lands”, what we know in this world as the Americas.
In a flashback, we see Priscilla when she was a normal lioness living in the original reality when humans controlled the world, and we learn that she lost her cubs to hunters and that she was also shot.
Later, she heads to a hidden bunker beneath her house that not even her husband knows, and we discover that there’s a huge sphere of light inside —which Charles confused with a crystal ball in his vision— where two realities are connected through a wormhole: the world of animals, and the world of humans, letting us realize that she is behind the creation of this alternate universe.
