Synopsis/Details
Rich Jewish families leave their treasures to professor Charon of Vilna to keep it safe at the beginning of WWII.
Lithuanian middle age couple accidentally finds the treasures hidden in the wall inside copper bricks at Vilnius University in 2010. JONAS and VERONICA visit their student daughter LINA in New York.
Lina has engagement party with MARK. Mark’s grandfather AARON has escaped the Holocaust due to visa issued by Japan consul Chiune Sugihara. He reveals Lina wears Holocaust victims’ jewelry and starts court process against Jonas and Veronica. He claims the treasures must belong to Litvaks- the inheritors of perished Vilna Jews.
Vilna swaps his masters for several times in 1939-1941. MOYSHE changes a flag on his house from Polish to Soviet, then to Lithuanian, to Soviet again, to Lithuanian for a while. Charon of Vilna withstands Soviet NKVD interrogation and keeps gold secret due to his ability to plunge into fantasy about his dead wife MIRIAM.
Nazis occupy Lithuania in 1941. SS OFFICER investigates Jewish gold mystery and forces Charon, which wife was Jew, to observe mass executions of Jews in Paneriai near Vilna. Charon becomes a “ferryman” of the dead. SS officer is affected by observation of killings. Miriam appears in dreams to both Charon and SS officer. Charon passes his secret and responsibility to the converted SS officer before his execution naming him a new Charon of Vilna.
Veronica’s paralyzed father unmasks (2010) by the help of alphabet: “I am the SS office”. He passes hidden treasures and responsibility to Veronica in his last will.
The Court is ready to confiscate treasures from Veronica– a new Charon of Vilna, the “ferrywoman” of the treasures of the dead.
A witness from Russia, offspring of Vilna Jews, hits the Court: in 1941 NKVD confiscated The Book of Vilna where rich Jewish families registered their treasures for safekeeping with Charon. The Book states a keeper becomes the owner of the treasures if inheritors do not claim for their property in 70 years…
