Synopsis/Details
Emily is in a constant struggle, tormented by recurring dreams where she's trapped underwater, desperately gasping for air. A determined scuba diver in Hawaii, Emily braves an unstable field and career path. Despite her achievements, her parents pressure her to find a more "viable" path. They remain oblivious to the fact that her supportive girlfriend, Sarah, is more than just a roommate. Emily's dream is to set records and swim on all the world's beaches.
Meanwhile, the renowned Frank Nobody, representing Nobody Industries, has chosen to set up shop in their beloved Hawaii, promising technological advancements for the community. This move divides the residents, with many opposing it. Emily strongly believes Nobody Industries prioritizes profits over protecting the ocean and its aquatic life.
On a stormy day, Emily, driven by her stubbornness, disregards warnings and goes diving. Tragedy strikes as she gets swept away by a strong current. Emily awakens in a hospital, surrounded by her parents, Sarah, and a harsh reality – she's paralyzed from the waist down, losing not only her mobility but also her cherished dream. Sarah encourages her to undergo physical therapy, but Emily's initial results leave her disheartened.
Seeking solace, Emily visits her Nana, who tells her about her late grandfather's attempt to build a machine to help people regain the use of their bodies. This sparks an idea in Emily, and she enlists Sarah's help, despite her initial reluctance. Sarah agrees, with the condition that Emily resumes her therapy. They work tirelessly on the prototype, aiming to help Emily walk again. Emily's parents are unsupportive, viewing her actions as reckless.
Emily and Sarah take their prototype to a pitching event attended by Frank Nobody and other investors. Despite their efforts, the sponsors express concerns about the financial risk. Frank Nobody approaches Emily afterward, offering to help her realize her dream, albeit on his terms. She declines, unwilling to compromise her principles.
As they try to bring their invention to the world, Emily faces multiple setbacks, including a hospitalization due to her worsening condition. Her parents are furious, expressing frustration with her choices. Emily finally confesses her sexuality and her relationship with Sarah, leading to a strained relationship with her parents. Sarah, feeling helpless, decides to end their relationship, unwilling to watch Emily's self-destruction.
This heartbreak becomes a turning point for Emily. With support from others and her Nana's encouragement, she decides to persevere. Tragically, Nana passes away in her sleep, but this event unites Emily and Sarah once more and strengthens Emily's resolve. At the funeral, she makes a beautiful speech and seeks to reconcile with her parents.
A sponsor from the pitching event tracks Emily down and offers an investment after facing new struggles in Frank Nobody's business due to a new marine bill. Emily gladly accepts the support. Armed with her prototype, she returns to the water.
As she swims deeper, the moment arrives where she's about to breach the surface and take that long-awaited breath...
