Synopsis
GREG WASHINGTON, chronically unfaithful to wife TRACY, finally crosses the line between fantasy and danger by falling in love with LOLA—a stripper. Tragically reckless, Greg’s internet browsing history and credit-card purchases of lavish gifts alert Tracy to what must be an uncharacteristically serious affair.
Emotionally devastated, Tracy convinces herself she’s tolerated Greg’s philandering far too long. Tonight it stops. Steeling her nerves, ready for any kind of confrontation, she drives out to the club where Lola “works” as an exotic dancer. Inside, Tracy’s resentment and rage explode—requiring two ripped bouncers to pull her from the dressing room and into cold night. Lola’s equally enraged, and shouts through the closing security door that Greg is the father of her unborn child. Choke on that, bitch! At home, Tracy hits her husband with the good news; Greg’s shock is as real as his fear of nuking the marriage, and losing touch with MARLON—their son. Choose her, cries Tracy, or me and Marlon. Greg chooses wisely, and for once means it.
Across nearly 20 years, the Washingtons’ lives unspool with welcome absence of dark drama, until a FaceTime session between father and son jolts Greg’s domestic comfort. Marlon’s college sweetheart, MAYA, is a Texan; her mother is named Lola. This can’t be, thinks Greg, even though he heard somewhere that Lola moved away and gave birth to a girl. Marlon says he really digs Maya; Greg’s churning anxiety drives him to hire a private investigator—he’ll find the truth, and everything will be okay. Nothing but a coincidence of names, right? After several days, the terse P.I. e-mails a detailed file. Hands shaking, Greg opens the message and clicks on the attached images. No! Lola’s slanted grin mocks his confidence, and Maya is beautiful. He must do what’s right—face Tracy’s fire, tell her that Marlon’s infatuated with his own half-sister. Tracy’s too disturbed even to be angry, and determines they’ll use Thanksgiving to inform Marlon. The plan fails: Marlon upsets the table and runs out to his car—Texas-bound. Repeated phone calls go unanswered, but Greg’s resourceful P.I. is able to track Marlon’s Android mobile to a physical address.
Following a long drive, Greg and Tracy arrive at Lola’s pink shotgun-style house. Glaringly surprised, she can’t bring herself to believe this sight—nor the couple’s clipped explanation for their presence. Laughing, Lola says Maya is not Greg’s daughter. She lied about that because Greg pissed her off by ending their sexual romp. Club-owner RODNEY is Maya’s real father—everybody knows that. If so, counters Greg, why isn’t the man named on the birth certificate the P.I. cracked on State database? Lola shakes her head: Rodney is married. Duh! Despite this reassurance, Greg’s unease forces him to schedule a DNA test. Lola agrees. Back home, awaiting results, Greg and Tracy work on repairing their fractured marriage, and strained relationship with Marlon. After two weeks, the test proves Maya’s father is . . . Greg—who breaks down, wailing like a doomed soul. Responsibility matters; consequences can bring torment. Calling Lola, Greg learns this is but the beginning of his own: Maya is pregnant . . . by Marlon.
