Synopsis/Details
Sins of a Preacher a feature screenplay synopsis by Teri L. Foster Three vacationing women meet three pastors, igniting passion—and purpose. Months later, a surprise pregnancy threatens one pastor’s marriage and demands an ultimate sacrifice. Synopsis Friends LISA JONES, ABIGAIL MILLER, and MIA LEWIS, vacationing in the Bahamas, meet at the pool conference-attending pastors ANDRE DUNCAN, BRIAN WILSON, and JAMES SIMON. That night, dining in a restaurant, the women again spot the trio and play a tequila-fueled game of Never Have I Ever. Abigail reveals—and laments—never indulging in a one-night stand. Shocked, Lisa and Mia refuse to believe her, then Lisa steps outside for a cigarette—running into Andre. Conversing, the two discover common feelings across a handful of topics; Andre invites Lisa and friends to the pastors’ table. Impulsively, Lisa blurts that newly divorced Abigail never has had a sexual overnighter. Laughter and talk continue late, and the men invite the women back to their suite. Entering the pastors’ suite, Brian tells Abigail he can fulfill her desire for a one-night stand, so escorts her into his room. Lisa and Andre, then Mia and James, pair off too for private frolics. Next morning, the group wakes to clumsy farewells and exits; the women order breakfast and share wild gossip. Later, preparing to leave, Lisa encounters Andre at the checkout desk, where they exchange contact info. Home in Chicago, the women keep their vow never to discuss the sexual tryst. Two weeks later, Andre calls Lisa: he’ll be in town for a conference; would she like to get together? Consenting, Lisa decides not to tell Abigail and Mia—they might judge her. Thus begin several secretive months, wherein Lisa learns Andre is married, is pastor of a New York mega-church. Knowing this relationship is wrong, she nonetheless covets and enjoys his attention and gifts. After all, here’s a golden opportunity to advance her lot in life—until Lisa misses her period, discovers she’s with child . . . Andre’s. Lisa tells Andre she’s pregnant, will keep the baby; he’s not happy about this. The church, his marriage—he could lose it all, so ghosts her. After several silent weeks, Lisa pays the pastor a surprise Sunday visit at his church. Should she tell APRIL—his wife—about the affair, the baby? Noticing Lisa seated on a rear pew, Andre becomes visibly agitated. April sees eye-contact between them, and stands to sing a hymn. Embarrassed, Lisa quickly exits. Discreetly, Andre follows, but a weeping Lisa breaks off the affair. After repeated phone calls, the pastor locates and travels to her apartment. It’s vacant. With Lisa remaining incommunicado for weeks, Andre hires to find her private investigator PETE. The baby is due soon; Andre struggles with conflicted feelings because he and April have for years been trying to one, and his life has spiraled out of control: drugs, prostitutes, embezzling from the church building fund—shameful. The accountant is suspicious, questioning; overly wise, fed-up April checks out of the marriage. Four months later, P.I. Pete finds Lisa cohabitating with Abigail in Chicago. Viewing photos of hugely pregnant Lisa, Andre openly weeps—hops a jet to C-town. Confronting her, he’s bombarded with with rage, but Lisa finally relents and allows him inside. Andre admits to constantly thinking about her and the unborn baby, but plans to sustain his marriage. Will Lisa, Andre asks, move to New York—keep the child a secret and never again have to work? Agreeing, she gives birth, names the baby: Andre junior. Andre then becomes a chronic presence in Lisa’s life; April is alone, but starts an affair with Deaconess KIM JONES. Finally, April shows up, tells Lisa that all along she knew about Andre’s and her relationship—one of many, it turns out. The baby cries; April seeks it out, comments how much Andre junior resembles her husband. Shockingly, April reveals she couldn’t give Andre a child because she was born male. Arguing over the baby, she beats Lisa to death with a high-heeled shoe, then calls over her lover, Kim, and Andre. Rolling the corpse in a rug, they depart with Andre junior, rob the church’s safe, and Andre returns to set the house afire. The bizarre family then drives south.
