Synopsis/Details
In the New Mexico desert, Anna Boogaard, a thirteen year old girl, is discovered walking away from the farm she has destroyed, killing her parents in the process. Johona Garcia, known as Jo, a Navaho policewoman, is sent to track the girl down but finds that she has joined up with Miguel, a young Mescalero Apache who is taking her to his reservation. Jo and her partner, Kramer, set off to follow them but are soon frustrated by Miguel's talent for avoiding anyone trying to track him, so they return to the farm. As they examine the evidence there, Jo's talents as a tracker are put to the test as she tries to figure out what happened. A coyote seems to be leading her to various items that will help. She knows the Coyote of legend as a trickster but is prepared to give this one the benefit of the doubt. The FBI arrive and take over the investigation, so Jo and Kramer return to the police station in Santa Fe to discover that the FBI seem to be there too, Anna arrives at the reservation in time for the puberty ceremony which she watches with Miguel and his mother. His mother tells her to leave because Miguel wants to use Anna's talent for creating tornados against the whites who killed his father. Coyote leads Anna to Jo's house and she stays there for a few days. She shows Jo her picture-book of the life of Jesus and tells her that Jesus lives by the sea, so that's where she must go if she wants forgiveness. The FBI (or maybe something even more sinister) kidnap Anna and take her to a holding place, ready for her to be flown to Roswell. Jo organises the Mescalero Apache to take her back. Both sides reach an impasse until Anna breaks out of the room by creating a tornado and brings down the helicopter sent to take her to Roswell. Once Anna is safe in the Apache reservation, Kramer and Jo return home. The next day the FBI step up a gear and send a Chinook helicopter full of troops to the reservation, only to find that Anna has already left and is heading for the White Sands reserve. As Anna crosses the White Sands, so she is joined by Coyote and all the other spirit animals of the Native peoples. The Armed forces are now closing in as Jo and Kramer try to catch up with her in their police car while being chased by the Feds in their armoured car. The spirits of the Apache and the Navaho warriors are there with Anna as she unleashes the whirlwind. The Chinook and the attack helicopters are brought down. Anna saves the FBI characters trapped in their burning car, then walks away towards the sea, Coyote by her side.
