Synopsis/Details
Isle of Man, 2019. Donna Wright (20s) is the full-time carer for her mum - who suffers from dementia.
Alone in her room and desperately unhappy, she trolls social media, hunting the vulnerable and posting hate-filled comments online.
Donna watches a TV appeal by MAUREEN and KEVIN JOHNSON (50s), a kind, middle-class couple whose five-year-old daughter Amy was abducted 25-years-earlier. An age-enhanced photograph shows how Amy would look today. Donna is transfixed; she looks almost identical to the ‘adult’ Amy.
Donna gets it into her head that she is Amy, she approaches the police and is interviewed by D.I. STELLA COLE (50s), and surrenders a DNA sample. Maureen is shown a photograph of Donna, she demands to see her. When they meet, Maureen is practically ready to have Donna move back into her old room, while Kevin, tiptoeing around his wife’s fragility is far more sceptical.
To everyone’s surprise, the DNA test reveals that Donna is Amy, Donna is utterly confused and furious at the woman she thought was her mother. Maureen is overjoyed, Kevin refuses to believe the results, but he is keeping a secret.
D.I. Cole reopens Amy’s case, she uncovers discrepancies in Kevin’s testimony. On a hunch she places him under surveillance, he leads police to a wooded area out of town, when it’s searched, skeletal remains are unearthed – They are Amy’s, she had been murdered 25 years earlier.
A media storm ensues, Cole admits to faking the DNA results and is fired. Cole is convinced that Kevin killed his daughter. Despite being fired, Cole continues to investigate. Kevin panics, he blames Donna for his downfall and plans to kill her and then himself. Cole rescues Donna in the nick of time, Kevin is arrested. In the aftermath, Maureen and Donna form a close mother and daughter bond.
