Synopsis/Details
Two years ago, a mysterious virus mutates a third of America’s population into anthropomorphic animal-like creatures, which the public calls “Crossbreeds.” Amid fear and tension, the government has these Crossbreeds walled off into a section of the country, allowed to live out whatever life they have now but forbidden from leaving due to concern that the virus may be contagious.
One of these Crossbreeds is Jacob Webber, a shy tech consultant who was transformed into a fox. He’s spent the last couple of years along the border, trying to help out his fellow Crossbreeds while missing his family back home. He volunteers at a local food shelter (which helped him after he attempted suicide shortly after he was changed) with his new friend Lamar (a polar bear) and even builds up a budding romance with Miranda, a lizard and exotic dancer with a troubled past.
When the quarantined zone finally regains contact with the outside world, Jacob decides to call up his parents and brother to tell them he’s okay, despite his fears that they will reject his new appearance. They don’t, but his brother Nolan soon calls him up with some disturbing news of his own: in the years since Jacob’s disappearance, he has joined up with the Vanguard, a group of anti-Crossbreed radicals who believe they are on a mission from God to rid the world of the infected. Now aware that his beloved brother is a Crossbreed himself and that they are only people trying to survive their new lives, Nolan wants out – but that is easier said than done.
Now Jacob is worried about his brother, and his fears are amplified when a Vanguard member attacks him one night – resulting in Jacob accidentally killing the unnamed assailant in self-defense. Unsure if it was just a random act of violence or if he was being targeted because of Nolan, Jacob confides in Miranda.
The next morning, Nolan calls Jacob to tell him that he quit the Vanguard, but the group's leader is looking to test Nolan's loyalty rather than let him leave peacefully. They abduct Jacob and bring him to the edge of the Q-Zone, where the Vanguard’s leader orders Nolan to kill him. Nolan naturally refuses, leading the group to attack both brothers. The fight ultimately ends with the leader’s followers abandoning him and him dying, finally bringing Nolan out of his commitment to the Vanguard. Eventually, the virus is found to not be contagious, and the Crossbreeds are allowed to leave the Q-Zone… including Jacob, who reunites with his family in a happy ending.
