Synopsis/Details
With the separatist movement approaching its political peak in 1991, PATRICK YONGE, a former agent for CSIS now giving political science lectures, is approached by a militant anti-separatist group to join their cause. CSIS and the RCMP, aware of this group and their leader JONATHAN ENGLISH, a radical who does not believe in loose ends, also approach Patrick through agent MALCOLM MUNROE, Patrick’s former mentor, to infiltrate this group and be their “inside man”.
Patrick refuses both requests but when his brother-in-law, working for the RCMP, is mysteriously murdered, he suspects that English is involved and agrees to work with the RCMP one last time. Once successfully part of the group, Patrick not only discovers the assassination plot, scheduled for Canada Day in Quebec City, but that he is to be the assassin using a specially designed remote-controlled rifle. Refusal would bring harm to his remaining family, a sister and niece. He also comes to realize that not only is Munroe, his former mentor, part of this but the girl he has been dating was actually sent to spy on him as well. Something he does not realize until after English has her killed. Remember, no loose ends.
On the day of the assassination, Patrick has by now put the scenario together only to find that he is not to survive this either. He now goes into attack mode. First, he finds and takes care of the actual assassin, one of English’s men. He is then able to use English’s weapon against him and kills him before English is able to carry out the assassination.
His final task is to confront Munroe. He presents evidence that implicates Munroe and he uses this information to “retire” and ensures that he is never to be contacted again. Not by Munroe, the RCMP or the press.
Munroe faced with Patrick knowing everything, agrees. Except that the whole thing has been completed just the way Munroe had planned.
