Characters:
JOE – a private detective/bounty hunter in his early 40s. In good physical condition, very sure of himself and somewhat world weary.
DAVE – A petty crook and loser, mid – 20s, scraggly, he exudes a feeling of desperation.
RAND – not much different than Dave. Peas from the same pod.
Synopsis:
JOE, is in his car, stopped at a red light in a small town. DAVE yanks the door open, lets himself in, scrunches down below the window and orders Joe to drive. Joe, not intimidated by the gun, drives away when he sees police coming in his direction.
Dave tells Joe a story, which may or may not be true, that he’s been hitching across the country to get to LA. There’s a job waiting for him there that could turn his misanthropic life around but it will be given to someone else if he’s not there by the next day. He’s run out of money and, moments before he inflicted himself on Joe, he’d robbed a liquor store and shot the clerk. This guy can’t help but screw up.
Joe offers Dave a job helping deliver a man he’s got tied up in the trunk to some members of an LA drug gang who want to exact revenge on him for the murder of the gang leader’s son. The gang is paying him $150,00 for his prisoner. Joe doesn’t trust the gangbangers and would feel better if there was another gun to help cover the men during the exchange. Dave takes the job for a fifteen grand cut of the bounty money.
When they get close to the exchange site, Joe stops the car, gets out and is about to retrieve the hapless prisoner from the trunk when he’s hit and killed by a large truck that doesn’t stop.
With Joe gone, Dave sees an opportunity. He figures to turn Joe’s prisoner, RAND over to the gangbangers and collect the money himself. Rand, however, offers Dave $200,000 to let him go. Dave accepts the offer, but, unable to pass up the hundred and fifty thousand ransom, forces Rand to help him steal the gangbangers’ money.
Dave drives to the exchange site. He and Rand shoot it out with the gangbangers and succeed in taking the bounty money. Rand tries to double cross Dave, but Dave kills him.
Late that night, Dave goes to Rand’s house and finds the money in a gym bag in the crawlspace under his house (Dave had forced Rand to tell him where it was before the shootout), but he has to quickly ditch it and the ransom money from the earlier job in a neighbor’s trash can when a police cruiser shows up unexpectantly and spots him.
When the police question him, Dave’s explanation for being in the neighborhood in the middle of the night fails to satisfy them. Dave tries to run, but he’s caught, cuffed and taken away.
Early the next morning, the HOMEOWNER in whose trash can Dave hid the money, hears the garbage truck coming down the street and suddenly realizes that he forgot to put out the trash cans the previous night. He’s so groggy that doesn’t notice that the trash truck has already passed his house by the time he makes it out to the curb with the cans.
A HOMELESS MAN comes down the street, searching the trash containers for bottle and cans. He sees that they’re all empty and is about to leave the area emptyhanded when he sees something sticking out of the neighbors’s recycling can. He opens it up, sees Rand’s gym bag and the gangbangers’ duffel. He takes them out and tosses them into his shopping cart. He’s about to open them to see what’s inside when a man who lives across the street yells at him, threatening to call the police if he doesn’t leave.
The homeless man hurries away down the street without looking in the bags. He’s in for a big surprise later.
