As Brad Riley sits in a classroom waiting for the adult education class on “Researching your family history” to begin, a woman enters and takes a seat. He realizes that she’s Caroline Sims, the girl he took to a party his senior year in high school. Brad was deeply in love, from afar, with Caroline, so much so that on that memorable night, when he’d finally mustered the courage to ask her out, he was unable to say one word to her, afraid that he would say something stupid and lose any chance of winning her love. He did indeed lose any chance with her that night. It broke his heart; he’s never really gotten over it. Brad introduces himself to Caroline and fills her in on how that dreadful evening begat a series of calamities that ruined his life: joining the Marines to try and forget his humiliating performance with her; combat in the first Gulf War where he was wounded, captured and tortured; homeless on the streets with PTSD, self- medicating with alcohol and meth…well, you get the picture. Caroline is devastated, blaming herself for not seeing the ordeal that Brad was going through on their date and trying to help him. At the end of the story, we discover that Brad is a screenwriter and that the entire account he gave Caroline was nothing more than a story he was making up on the spot to use in a script he and his writing partner are hung up on.

The Writer: Phil Richards

Writing has always come naturally for me; I was told as far back as the third grade that I had a talent for it. But despite this early recognition, I didn’t pursue writing seriously until fifteen years ago when I finally got it together and wrote three novels. It was a great experience, but it didn’t feel like what I was supposed to be doing. Five years ago I began writing screenplays and so far I’ve put together four features and seven shorts. Watch this space for new projects. I've sold a few shorts and sold a feature script which is currently in development limbo. Fingers crossed it will eventually be produced. Go to bio
