Synopsis/Details
The mating of dragons with other races has always been forbidden, for the joining creates an unstable and vicious creature known as the draconis vritra. Gold dragon, Valin, meddles in the forbidden in open rebellion against Lord Aris and Lady Taja, the most powerful dragon mages in Tiernan’s history. When Valin magically coerces the Xanadrin healer, Opal, he uses her magic to create the first ever vritra healer. Aris searches for a long time for Opal, the lovely healer that saved him from Valin’s stone prison; only to find her hidden away and heavy with child. The cursed offspring vritra are known to rip themselves from their mother’s womb, and the sweet tempered Opal is the newest victim. Aris can do nothing but hold her dying body in his arms, and eradicate the evil spawn that killed her.
Yet, the child inherited his mother’s healing magic; and before Aris can finish the job, Valin steals away his son, Ruan, and the woman who birthed him. Ruan’s fledgling magic is able to save his life, but he is left voiceless forever. Opal’s magic may have healed him completely, but they will never know, for Valin has led Ruan to believe his sweet mother is dead. Hidden away for his protection, Valin teaches his son all he knows about the draconis vritra, and attempts to have Ruan bear some more offspring for further study. Shy and reserved Ruan turns out to be a more complicated and unwilling experimentation than Valin hoped, and his healing magic makes him less susceptible to Valin’s coercion, leaving Valin’s studies maddeningly unfinished.
When Valin disappears, Ruan is left alone. The magical barrier Valin placed on his tower keeps him undetected, even from Lord Aris, but Ruan still fears for his life. He spends his time studying languages and painting as he avoids detection and possible extermination at the hands of Lord Aris.
When the worlds of Tiernan and Earth unexpectedly merge, Ruan's whole life is thrust into chaos: for the magical beings of Tiernan, the nature magic Xanadrin and the shadow magic Udaas, have decided they are the ones who should rule the new world. The Earthlings stand up in open rebellion against the newly formed “Shosha”, attempting to retain as much of their normal Earth life as they can. Lord Aris and the dragon clans strive to bring peace between the warring races as the remaining draconis vritra hunt and wreak havoc amongst the unsuspecting inhabitants.
Upon being discovered by an Earth woman named Miran Gi, Ruan leaves his home for the first time and ventures out into the new worlds. Miran Gi discovers Ruan’s healing abilities and asks him to save the life of her sister, Mi Cha, the leader of the Earth rebels. She finds his reluctance to use his magic is because the instability of his Xanadrin magic and dragon blood causes strange and aggressive changes in his nature that leaves him feeling like the monster Aris claims him to be. Miran Gi becomes determined to help Ruan discover self-worth and tame his beastly side; and Ruan learns what it feels like to be wanted and loved.
Ruan’s life is once again threatened as Aris discovers he is indeed still alive; and even more dangerous than before. The other vritra seem to be drawn to and influenced by the gentle healer, and Ruan finds his fellow vritra are not all as blood thirsty and evil as he was led to believe. With Miran Gi's help, they set out to save and protect the draconis vritra from Lord Aris's vengeance. The Earthlings have some tricks up their sleeves, however, and Miran Gi uses Earth law to her greatest advantage in protecting the sweet tempered Ruan. Justice and honor bound, Aris is still determined to end the vritra threat in any way he can, even if it puts him at odds with the beloved, long-lost son of the woman he loves.
And yet even from the grave, Valin hides other secrets in the form of his full blood dragon son, Yuvraj, who seems bound and determined to watch the new worlds burn.
