Synopsis/Details
We’ve all been there. Shared a few too many wobbly pops with friends and let our loosened lips declare an outlandish goal or dream that we are definitely going to make happen! Then the next day, it’s all smirked away or even forgotten. But not for three middle-aged pals; Billy, Curtis, and Tomas. One night while tossing back some brews, Billy sees a smudged Papa Hemingway quote on the restroom wall: Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk.
An inspired Billy convinces his pals to do just that. They each come through on simple tasks the next day. But Billy is now hooked and wants to go bigger. He needs something – his selfish parents are not only social butterflies who live with him rent free, but they’re also quite demeaning. Thankfully, his promise to “give back” will lead to meeting the love of his life. But will it last? Ehhh…
Curtis can’t get it up. Well, he doesn’t want to. His wife is ready to start a family but the pressure of becoming a dad has him all out of whack. So to avoid that issue for a few weeks, he declares the equally terrifying promise of performing an original song in public. Oh, but he has never even picked up a guitar or written lyrics before. So he signs up for a group lesson where he meets fellow student and extremely pregnant Chloe. They strike up a friendship that ultimately stretches the patience and tolerance of his wife even further.
Tomas, meanwhile, has the perfect life with the perfect wife and kids. Struggling to identify any shortcoming, he spots the Pop-a-Shot in the bar and divulges that he’s never dunked a basketball. But when it proves to be more challenging than anticipated, the simple endeavor eats up more of his time and emotional balance. His continuing failure causes his idyllic life to fall apart; like wife-throwing-him-out-of-the-house apart.
The determined trio will encounter their own ignorance, physical limitations, unsupportive families, and seductive temptation. A house will burn, an alcoholic will be a breath of fresh air, and perfection will crack like an egg. Which will make it all the more painful when they find out there was more to that Hemingway quote: “Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That’ll teach you to keep your mouth shut.”
Cringey, excruciating, honest, heartbreaking, enlightening, and sometimes hilarious, Drunk Promises is sure to inspire millions to make good on their own promises. Or to never drink a drop again.
