Synopsis/Details
Present Day. Former Air Force test pilot and thrill seeker John Baker is part of a unique mercenary group called "The Terminals" in which each member has some form of terminal illness. On the anniversary of his wife's death and still stuck in the anger phase of grief, Baker and town Sheriff, Frank Martinez, stumble upon a crashed ship and an injured human pilot. The pilot dies before Baker can get any answers but, in the process, Baker is set upon by nanites that act like an invasive parasite. Soon after, Baker and Frank get attacked by aliens and their world changes in a heartbeat. Baker and Frank win the fight through strategy and luck.
Quickly assessing the situation, and knowing full well what the government's response will be, he calls his team for assistance and hikes through a forest in search of the alien's spacecraft. While on the phone, Baker suffers a painful sensation in his ears, and then a voice appears inside his head. His name is Auxcius, and although he is a conscience entity of a different alien species, he presents himself as an AI of the "operators" that entered Baker's body. It is clear that Auxcius has his own agenda and helps Baker on his own terms. With his team on the way, Baker keeps this information to himself and presses on to find the alien spacecraft, called a Talon, and is a fighting craft. Auxcius helps him enter and learn how to pilot the Talon.
Baker's team arrives behind a truck stop owned by Baker's sister, who is also Frank's wife, right after Frank arrives with the alien corpses. They are soon set upon by two Talon's. Knowing they are outgunned, they play possum and kill the first pair of aliens who land their Talon, leaving only one Talon in the air. The Terminals lose the fight. Baker's sister is killed in the process. Just when it looks like the are all about to be killed, Baker shows up in his Talon and destroys the enemy Talon.
Baker learns of his sister's death and goes crazy. One of his team, DJ, inadvertently gets on a video call with the leader of the slavers scouting party, Kurn. Auxcius' implants allowing Baker to hear him also translate the alien tongue into english. Baker takes over the video call and threatens Kurn, then without hesitation, tells his team they are going into space to finish the job and save human captives.
The FBI arrives and a brief standoff ensues while Baker, his rage barely contained, gets his way to keep the government out of it. But there's one catch. The FBI lead agent is going with them. Frank joins as well, wanting revenge for the death of his wife.
The team boards a human vessel occupied by Kurn and several Pugnati, the elite soldiers of the Bolarem species. A brief, but brilliant, tactical plan is employed to save the humans and kill the enemy. When all is said and done, each of the team receives an auditory implant to allow them all to understand the alien language. They learn that there a master race, who disappeared about fifty years ago, took six different species from different worlds and brought them to the Imperium Galaxy to serve them. With the disappearance of the master species, the Galaxy is in turmoil. The humans there are under constant threat by the Bolarem and need help.
Auxcius informs Baker that their trip will likely be met with a Bolarem slave ship. Baker realizes that to save Earth from invasion, to save the humans and other species from slavery, and to get his own revenge, they have to leave as soon as possible and cannot afford the red tape delay of the US Government.
And so their adventure begins.
