Synopsis/Details
Sixteen-year-old Nicky is a normal high school kid, still living at home with her mum and dad, worrying about exams and getting assignments done and whether her friends are okay.
But she also has a holiday job.
At the end of each semester she flies to LA. There, with FBI agent Tim Shaw, she uses her skills as a traveler to find missing people.
Hikers, abducted children, grandmothers with Alzheimer’s, serial killers the police are looking for – Nicky can find them all. She can look at a photo of the missing person and disappear and reappear wherever they are. But for every person the clock is ticking. If they no longer look like their photo – if the person has been dead too long, or the kidnapped five-year-old becomes a six-year-old or a seven-year-old, it is too late. Or if they have gone too far out of the city, too far away for her to travel to, they will stay missing forever.
And no one can know what she does because then everyone will want her, so she turns her back on the rejoicing families, the cops slapping each other the back, and fades into the shadows.
She doesn’t want to be a superhero, she just wants to stay safe so she can help.
Tim is there to make it happen, but he’s fighting his own demons. His daughter was raped and murdered when she was a teenager and would be the same age as Nicky is now. His wife, unable to handle the grief, committed suicide. Now his new girlfriend Joanna must constantly remind him that Nicky is not the daughter he lost.
And there is those Nicky is not sure she wants to find, or find her. Fellow travelers Jake, Shelley, Tina and Paul along with his father – the Guardian of the Project. Did they survive when the Project’s base in the Mexican desert was bombed several years ago? Tim helped her escape but for the others there was no hope – or was there?
Nicky doesn’t know who wanted the Project destroyed and the travelers dead but, most of all, she doesn’t know whether they’ve realized she’s still alive.
