Synopsis/Details
10th century Ireland. Halloween. Rebellious, fourteen-year-old Finn is kidnapped by the supernatural Fae and imprisoned in their world (the Otherworld). In revenge, his father destroys the sacred ring of stones which acts as gateway between their world and ours, inadvertently trapping all inside. Finn meets Siobhan, the proud, pragmatic leader and surrogate mother of the changelings (kidnapped human children the Fae use as slaves) and they form a close bond. With his arrival, she sees a chance to share her burden. Finn, though, is more interested in escape. His displays of prodigious strength and defiant courage mean he is singled out by Diarmuid, the bombastic, loose cannon King of the Fae. All seems lost when Finn rushes to the defence of one of Siobhan’s young charges and kills his fae assailant. As a consequence, he faces a trial of combat against the terrifying half-human, half-fae champion of the Otherworld, Oisin – Diarmuid’s own son by a kidnapped human mother.
Oisin hates his father as much as he hates the Fae who ostracise him for not being of pure blood. He is supported by Queen Grainne, who wishes the Fae could all be a bit more human. With her help, he deliberately loses the fight to Finn to get banished from the Otherworld, escaping into our world by a secret way she has shown him, and leaving Finn as the new champion. Finn soon grows tired of the role. Behind Diarmuid’s back, Grainne strikes a deal with him. She offers him and Siobhan a chance to leave if he can return the sacred stones his father took. To ensure his good faith, Siobhan must stay behind. Finn agrees – but he doesn’t emerge where he thinks. A long time has passed in the human world and the stones have been moved to 21st century America.
Finn joins a carnival of runaways and gets plucky trapeze artist Mia and her wise-cracking, knife-throwing boyfriend Dakota to help. Their search leads them to the house of the sinister Mr O’Sheen, who claims to know where the stones are. But Mr O’Sheen is not who he says he is. He is Oisin - and he is out for revenge. He is going to use the stones (and Finn) to draw Diarmuid and the Fae out from the Otherworld and strand them in America, where the humans can destroy them all. He takes Finn to Fenway Park where the stones have been buried at each base of the diamond and rigged with explosives. As Diarmuid and the army of the Fae emerge on Halloween night (Game 7 of the World Series!), only Finn stands between them and certain destruction.
