Synopsis/Details
Two pigs are on the run from a pursuing search party. They escape into the forest, but one of the pigs, Peter, is attacked and killed by a Bobcat. His brother, Percival, falls into a river and is taken down stream.
Katie is a young blind girl who lives in rural Texas. She is bullied at school and performing poorly academically. Her father is called in to have a meeting and we learn Katie's mother has died in after a protracted and expensive medical crisis.
Trey takes her home and the home life is lonely and depressing. Trey is overworked as he tries to save their farm and home from foreclosure and Katie only has Buddy the dog as a friend. She goes for a walk and discovers Percival asleep near the creek. She brings him back to the pig pen assuming him to be an escaped farm pig. He takes a liking to Katie.
Later that night Katie's father tries to help her cope with her depression by reminding her of prayer and their Christian faith. She is not comforted by this. In the middle of the night, she wakes and decides to visit Percival. She discovers that Percival can talk. He sounds like a small child trying to speak. His intelligence is also very basic. She decides to protect him and hides him in her closet.
Katie explains that he is the HOG on the news. There is a manhunt for him and the company wants to capture him for his organs. Percival suffers from survivor's guilt and PTSD after the escape and Bobcat attack. She comforts him by teaching him to pray to Jesus and explains his brother is in heaven with her mother. Percival is naive and believes every word about Heaven and Jesus like a small child would believe in Santa.
Amber Conrad is sent by her father, the CEO of Genetic Solutions, Kane Conrad, to lead the manhunt for the H.O.G. He is irate at losing the pig and blames her entirely because she is the Operations Manager. Amber presumes the pig may wash up down-stream of where it was lost. She locates Trey's property and they quickly are attracted each other. She leaves him a card in case he locates the pig.
Katie realizes she must protect Percival by preventing Trey from developing a relationship with Amber, but despite her protests he goes on a date with her. Amber admires him for being a loving father, unlike her own. And Trey soon depends on her for moral support and friendship. That night Trey discovers Percival is in the house when he awakens squealing from a PTSD nightmare of his brother being killed by the Bobcat.
Trey decides to let Katie keep him, since she obviously loves him. Trey continues to struggle to bring in enough money to keep the house but ultimately fails. Meanwhile, Amber gets closer to Trey and a number of suspicious incidents involving Percival lead her to assume he is the missing pig. She comes to the house while no one is home to scan Percival for a microchip, but he runs away and hides among the farm pigs.
Amber can't locate him among the others and leaves. Trey arrives to collect all the pigs and sell them off at a livestock show for money. Percival gets sold on accident with the others. Later he finds himself being brought to an abattoir with the other pigs. For comfort, he befriends a pig and names it "Peter" after his brother.
Katie comes home from school and finds Percival missing. Trey asks Amber to help search for him, but despite searching for hours they find nothing. Amber is guilt ridden when she sees how hysterical and sad Katie is. Trey figures out what must have happened and they depart to the abattoir to try and rescue Percival. Percival is saved at the last moment from slaughter, but once again sees his friend Peter sent into the room where pigs are killed, triggering his survivor's guilty once again.
Later that night Amber scans Percival and finds his true identity. Katie has Percival speak in front of Amber, revealing his intelligence. Amber is torn because she loves Trey and wants Katie to be happy, but also knows the pig possesses transplant organs that will save lives. Amber promises she will keep him a secret, to protect Percival's life and keep Katie and the family from another devastating loss.
Despite being "in the clear", Percival is burdened heavily by guilt. He ran away when his brother was dying. He abandoned other pigs during a mishap where he was mixed in with other pigs by accident and nearly killed at an abattoir. He has constantly dodged death, and always left others in his place. He is plagued by nightmares and depression.
Katie helps Percival to cope with this by showing him cartoons about Jesus' gospels. Percival resolves to be baptized and to turn himself in so that he can clear his conscience. He wants to save lives, stop running, and save the family farm by collecting the reward. He is baptized by Katie in the creek. That night he says goodbye to her while she is still asleep.
Percival reveals to Trey that he can talk, and he is the missing H.O.G. Trey is heartbroken that Percival wants to turn himself over because of how it will hurt Katie. Ultimately, he turns him over so more human lives can be saved, to respect Percival's choice, and to save the farm. Katie awakens to see Percival being hauled off by Company men and has a meltdown. Trey calls Amber for moral support. Together they all go to the hospital so that they can get Katie a final goodbye with Percival.
Amber convinces her father to allow Katie to say farewell to Percival. They have a heart felt goodbye as he lays on the operating table. He promises Katie he will be waiting for her in heaven with his brother, her mom, and Jesus. The family leaves and Percival dies holding his hoof in the hand of the young girl who is awaiting his heart on the table beside him.
Time passes and the farm is now an animal sanctuary. Amber and Trey are married and pregnant. Katie has bronze statues of Percival and her mother she visits and talks to about life and the lessons she learned about appreciating those you have while they are in your life.
Far in the future, Katie is now an elderly woman on her deathbed, sharing the story of Percival with her extended family. She asks them to go so she can rest. They leave her alone and Katie passes away. There is a tunnel of light and she is once again a young woman. She sees the rainbow bridge where all our beloved animals cross over into the afterlife. And there is Percival, flying over with angel wings. He explains he has been waiting for her and everything she promised was true.
Together they go to the family farm where Katie sees her mom and dad waiting in the distance. She and Percival go home, to live in peace and love forever.
