After alien spacecraft appear, a deadly mucus-borne disease begins spreading rapidly among humans, turning them into violent "campers." A group of survivors hole up in a farmhouse, including medic Margie who believes there may be answers at a nearby mobile lab. When a diseased soldier finds them with a map to the lab, Margie along with a fellow survivalist embark to find it.
But things go from bad to worse when one of their fellow survivors at the farmhouse becomes infected with the alien virus. Now they're faced with unavoidable decisions. Can they wait for the others to return from the lab (if they ever do) in hopes of saving him, or should they kill him to avoid infecting the others? Whatever the decision, they must act fast as the sickness is taking over more quickly than they realize. With shady characters afoot and mutated humans on the hunt, the group must bond together to make tough decisions for themselves and each other.
Although the film centers on a small group of people, the story ends on a much bigger picture. Our heroes live in a complex apocalyptic world with a rich history, full of survivalist desperation and treachery. Each character has a fully developed and unique origin story. By the end of the film, we can’t help but wonder where these characters will go, who else they might find, and how they will defeat the humans-turned aliens in this desolate wasteland.
Interruption is an exciting and well-crafted story that explores the importance of humanity at the end of the world. It uses great world building and visuals to make a complicated story feel familiar and easy to follow.
The most impressive thing about this script is the structure and the way it takes a really complicated situation and makes it easy to understand for an audience. Sci fi can be really difficult to do in a single film. It can be hard to fit all the necessary world building into just two hours of screentime, but this is brilliantly done in this script. The use of the flashbacks help deliver exposition in the cinematic way and keep the story moving and exciting as it build to the climax. The fact that the exact reasons behind the apocalyptic event are unknown to the characters works really well, too. You don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining things because the characters themselves don’t really know.
Overall, this is a great script that does a lot of story building in a concise and entertaining way. It uses great characters and perfect world-building to create a story that feels simply epic. - Kate Miller
